We stayed on a Tui holiday 1st week in July. The hotel is beautifully maintained with modern touches and clean and the staff are lovely. It has lovely communal areas and tastefully designed.

The food is varied and the buffet selection good. You can also help yourself and make a pack lunch for your day out from the breakfast selection for which they supply bags, the only thing you then have to provide is a drink, breakfast is from 7am to10am. The only downside to the evening meal is that the restaurant is only open from 6.30pm to 8pm 1 1/2 hours so you have to be in for 6.30 to get through the courses and have a relaxed meal otherwise they are rushing you to finish your meal so they can pack everything up for 8pm I personally think this is a little unprofessional and possibly cost cutting issue re staff and the kitchen and not acceptable for a modern hotel. This is the first time we have come across this in Austria . This is also not flexible if you have been out on a trip for the day. The other issue is the selection of main courses is also very limited maximum 2 choices. I am not sure how you would go on if you were vegetarian as there were no vegetarian main courses. I suspect this would be pre arranged as you did have to fill in dietary reguirements on registration. However the salad buffet dishes were not labelled and a lot of them contained meat and fish?

The rooms are modern and well maintained however i would advise that you book the junior suites upwards as the standard doubles are small and not best situated. Our double with balcony only afforded a shower and the room was small & dark and the view from the balcony was of the Spa roof. Some of the doubles with balcony share an open balcony decking area just so you know. The Suites however are lovely and worth the extra we paid to change.

The only other comment i would make is that there was supposed to be cake from 3pm onwards this however was never put out so guests could help themselves we were not asked if we would like some despite sitting in the foyer or outside. The only time it was offered was when we ordered a drink!

All in all an excellent holiday and a lovely hotel. Other plus points is the free bike hire. Just a few issues that could be addressed to make it excellent for future residents and to encourage return visits and recommendations. Also provision of the Zell am zee-kaprun summer card would have been really beneficial.

Room Tip: Select Junior suites upwards for the best stay

I recently travelled to the Hotel Stadt Wien with my husband and two sons, having been to Austria before I kind of knew what to expect from Austrian hospitality but this hotel took it to the next level. Having arrived late in the evening we were greeted with a welcome drink and a tasty buffet meal. The meals did not disappoint at all during our trip and I miss having my omelettes made fresh every morning by the lovely Victoria. The salad buffet was particularly good but in general the selection of food was terrific and I know the hotel accommodated other guests with special dietary requirements. Our waiting staff were always so lovely and attentive. You could also make a packed lunch at breakfast time which was extremely useful if you planned a whole day out and about. Our room was on the second floor and overlooked the back of the hotel with its outdoor pool, childrens play area and petting zoo. A terrific place for kids. I used the pool on more than one occasion and frequently had it to myself which was a joy. The hotel is located a 10 minute stroll from the town centre, the walk back is uphill though. Free bike hire was available from the hotel and they also had other useful equipment available to use. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a massive balcony and was always spotless. We were all sad to leave at the end of our week. Useful tip for the trip if you plan to do a lot of hiking get the mountain/swim card, adult price €95.50 for 6 days, it gives you access to all the cable cars, lidos and local buses, it also gets you a discount on the panoramic boat trip of the lake. Also a family of four can get to Salzburg for €42 return by train which takes just over an hour and a half each way. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone especially with children heading out to Austria and hope to return some day in the future.

The Stadt Wien is a wonderful hotel and pretty much faultless. The staff, the bedroom and facilities were excellent. It's popular with couples but also families and there's plenty to keep the young ones entertained.

The hotel is in the Schmitten district, a five or 10 minute walk uphill from the town centre (or you can catch the bus). At heart it's a traditional Austrian hotel but has been much renovated and extended to offer the standards we all expect these days.

Our room was big and comfortable on the 2nd floor, had free wifi, generous storage and hanging space, a balcony, TV, a safe, bathroom and separate toilet. The shower was excellent! Maid service was faultless and the hotel throughout was spotlessly clean.

Unlike many guests, who were half-board, we were bed and breakfast only. It was a bit odd having an allocated table - something we're not used to in hotels - but the choice available was excellent including many local treats. You could have eggs cooked fresh for you. Awaiting us every morning was a news sheet with info on what to do in the town and hotel, which was a nice touch. The lunch menu is modest but tasty.

There's a bar but during our stay it was quiet and most guests appeared to go to bed very early! We went into town instead, which was reasonably busy.

The hotel location is on the road up to the Schmittenhohe cable car and the bus to it stops right outside - otherwise it's a long uphill walk to the lower station. We loved the mountains and lake views, the walking and mountain restaurants.

We spent a couple of days by the hotel pool (it’s one of the few hotels in Zell am See with an outdoor pool). Apparently it’s going to be made over in the near future as it is beginning to look its age but it was heated and had pleasant views over the hills. Other facilities include indoor relaxation areas and a sauna.

Definitely recommended.

We have just returned from a fantastic week at the stadt wein. A beautiful and tastefully decorated family run hotel. The food was excellent with plenty of choice and the staff were so friendly. We were staying half board however they encourage you to make packed lunches and even provide bags for your lunch. We were lucky enough to receive a room upgrade and had a fantastic one bedroom suite with a massive bathroom and a balcony which led onto the kids play area. The hotel has a lovely little pool which was never busy and which has lots of sunbeds and chairs.
It's in a great location and only about a 10 minute uphill walk from the centre of Zell am see.
The hotel provides you with a discount card and kids under 12 can use the cable cars and the gorge at kaprun for free (along with a few other things) which was a great saving. They also have a massive selection of bikes and helmet which you can borrow.
We've enjoyed our stay so much we've already booked for next year.

We stayed in this hotel during late June, early July 2018 and had a really enjoyable time. The hotel itself is clean and modern. The rooms are relatively large for European rooms and are well appointed (see photos). The food and service were first class. For example, although our flight was delayed (thanks to a French Air Traffic dispute), we were pleasantly surprised to find there was a meal waiting for us on arrival. The food itself never disappointed and the variety and options provided should suit almost all tastes and ages. I particularly recommend the local regional beers and the regional cheeses. As others have noted, the hotel encourages guests to make a pack lunch from the breakfast buffet and even provides brown paper bags. This is worth doing, as eating out in Austria can be expensive. The hotel also provides bikes for free and electric bikes for a fee. We took out a couple of bikes on a couple of days and would highly recommend this. On one trip we rode round the bottom of the lake to Fischhorn Castle where Hermann Göring was captured by American soldiers and then back around the top of the lake to Zell. On the other trip we rode to the top of the lake and then through Maishofen until we got a great photo of the Hochkönig mountains. Another highlight of the hotel (although some may dispute this) is Carlos the donkey and the other animals in the petting farm. Carlos was a noisy early riser during our stay, which didn't bother us too much as we were staying at the front of the hotel, but did provoke a few comments from others who were staying in rear facing rooms that overlook the garden and the pool. From other reviews, it looks like the hotel is relatively quiet in June and consequently is more likely to accommodate specialised groups. I see a cycling group stayed in the hotel the week before we arrived and during our week the European Viper club stayed for a few nights. For us, this wasn't a problem, in fact it was a bonus. The Viper club were great craic, although one member, who happened to be Swiss, just didn't seem to grasp why I was so keen on VAR in the World Cup. Perhaps if he had been a Romanian referee he may have understood!

Things to know. It is a 10 minute walk to the hotel from the centre of the town. But this is a ten minute walk up hill, which can be tough if you have been walking all day.

While trains are cheap, the buses and the cable cars are relatively expensive. If this is an issue for you, consider a hotel that participated in the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card scheme. Unfortunately the Stadt Wein is not part of this scheme. On the plus side, a return train trip to Salzburg for a family of four was just €42.

The weather can change quickly, bring suitable layers and waterproofs. This sounds obvious, after all you are in the mountains, but is was amazing to see some folk on the high dams in Kaprun who were clearly unprepared when the weather changed suddenly and dramatically for the worse.

Finally, be aware that the shops close early. While the quality in the shops is good and you may get items that are hard to source at home, at about the same price that you would pay on line, make sure to check when the shop closes. Most shops seemed to close around 17.00 to 18.00.

Room Tip: Front rooms have a partial view of the lake, but get some traffic noise. Rooms at the back should be quieter, except if Carlos is braying.
