My husband and I took the Schmittenhohe to the top. The summit station has a restaurant and a large balcony with a viewing area. You get a glorious view of snowy mountain peaks, the green valley and blue lake below.
We took the Panorama High Altitude walk. This afforded gorgeous views all along the 45-minute walk along the ridge. On the way we stopped and had lunch at the Hochzeller-Alm. Service was very prompt and friendly. The menu had translations in English. They have picnic tables overlooking the beautiful mountains. They also have lounge chairs where you can relax, have a beer and take in the view.
After lunch we continued on our walk to the Sonnkogelbahn. We stopped at their restaurant. They have a patio overlooking the glorious views. Had a drink and an ice cream sundae with hot raspberries. Delicious! We then took the Sonnokogelbahn down the mountain. This is a two-seater ski lift. It's a fantastic ride--quite long, quiet and with the fantastic views all around you. We then took the Sonnenalmbahn back to the parking area.
This was one of our most enjoyable days in Austria. If you go, make sure it's a clear day.
The cost for all three cable cars was 50 euros for two with a discount with our card given to us by our Hotel Stadt Wien. The large cable cars take about 25-30 people.
