We have just come back from a very good holiday in Kaprun. Our 3rd time in Kaprun and 8th in the Zell area. We have previously stayed at the Tauernhof and for no other reason than the Alpenhaus looked very good and the price was very competitive we decided to stay here for a change. It was excellent. If you read my previous reviews you will note I rated the Tauernhof high. In comparing the two I think the Alpenhaus is that little bit better in a couple of areas. But not by much.

Hotel Facilities.
The hotel building quality is excellent. I cant recall exactly when it was renovated but it was not long ago. All the public areas, dining room, wellness facilities, swimming poll and rooms are blemish free. The decor in the public areas is relaxing and functional. We did not use all of the wellness facilities available but found the swimming pool, adjacent jacuzzi and loungers very good. The outdoor pool was not open.
The ski boot room is split into two, with racks numbered by room number for skies in one area and heated racks for boots in another.
The dining area was a mix of different sub rooms that was well managed by the staff to ensure that big groups and those with children were just as easily accommodated as couples.
Food.
Typically Austrian. The breakfast buffet met expectations of a 4* hotel with some additional items like omelettes on demand. Although you just amble into the dining area and find a table, one of the attentive friendly staff will very soon come along and ensure you are given guidance on the buffet if dining for the first time, or bring you one of the order items if so desired.
The 4 course evening menu was sometimes a bit eclectic for our taste but we always found an one of the main options turned out to be appetising. Even if we were not quite sure what to expect :-). Excluding one evening, the meals were a la carte.

Room.
The rooms are where this hotel is that bit better than the Tauerhof. They are bigger, have more storage for clothes, a better balcony and better quality bathrooms. We stayed in a second floor room looking out of the side of the hotel over the garden gazebo / terrace toward the mountains. It was well maintained by the friendly room team and with carpeted hallways very quite. The only time we were disturbed was on the last night but that was understandable due to people having to leave at 6am to get flights. That's not the hotel fault so I still gave it a high sleep rating.

Location.
This hotel is located in centre of things in Kaprun which over the years has spread out a bit along the route to the Kitzsteinhorn. So some other hotels offered by Crystal like the Victoria and Toni are much further out of the centre. The Das Aplenhaus like the Taurenhof has a good location from a skiing perspective. It is a very short walk to the bottom of the Maiskogel Lift or the Lechner beginners slope. The skibus route goes past the hotel with stops again just a short walk from the hotel. This is teh main route between Zell and the Kitzsteinhorn There are three Intersport outlets within a short walk, one just across the road from which to hire skis and there are two ski schools in very close proximity.

There are a number of bars including Killy's, The Baumbar and The Pavillion Apres bar all a short walk from the hotel if you want to go elsewhere at nighttime. We went to them all and enjoyed them music and buzz for a while. But if you are now used to smoke free bars be advised. SMOKING IS STILL ALLOWED INSIDE BARS IN AUSTRIA. So we tended to go out early evening before the bars got to full and the smog generated. We then went back to the hotel bar as it has a NO SMOKING policy inside the hotel with exception of a separate room in the bar / lounge area.

Staff.
All the staff we had direct contact with in the Alpenhaus were very good. Not surprisingly there were a few that were excellent. Bianca and Sandra in the restaurant but most notable Olga on the front desk. She can multi task phones, terminals and written material whilst smiling and talking to customers in at least three languages but maybe more. We didn't have any issues during our stay but she always seemed to be on front desk when I had a simple query as well as on check in / out.

Room Tip: The rooms on the second floor were quiet.

We stayed at this hotel from 21st-28th Jan 17, husband, myself and two kids aged 11ys and 7ys. We booked fairly last minute through Crystal. We were very impressed with the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay - couldn't fault it in any way. On arrival we were given a warm welcome and had the nice surprise of being upgraded from two double rooms to two suites. These were absolutely lovely - very spacious, with austrian twin bed (huge) and a separate 'lounge' area with a fire effect feature which gave the room a really cosy feeling. The room, as the rest of the hotel, was spotlessly clean, and every feature and facility we found to be in good working order - it seems an extremely well-run hotel. Beds were very comfortable and we always slept well, never any noise or disturbance in the night. We stayed half-board, which included breakfast, 4 course evening meal and a 'skiers snack'. We found the food to be outstanding - breakfast was a delight, with a huge selection of breakfast items hot and cold items, with plenty of healthy options - I particularly loved the Alpenhaus 'energiemusli', so delicious! Dinner was equally as good - always with a buffet starter, with lots of choice but with healthy foods such as raw vegetable dishes and wonderful fresh seeded breads. There is then a soup option, a choice of four or five main dishes and choice of several desserts - everything we had was of a high standard. We also made good use of the spa facilities, using the swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna every day after skiing - the kids especially loved this aspect of the hotel. The location is also excellent - very central and within easy walking distance of the Maiskogel chairlift and the ski school at Lechnerburg. Overall a fantastic holiday!

Booked two nights for New Year's eve weekend only to show up at the hotel, and have the reception staff apologising for the error they made. They didn't try to shift any blame to me but rather admitted that its 100% their fault. Not an easy talk to find an alternative at the busiest weekend of the year but the hotel staff did their outmost to remedy the situation, they contacted many hotels until they found a suitable alternative which we took. They screwed up with the booking but their professional efforts to fix the situation left actually a very positive experience with us.
