Owner description: Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource. As part of the National Park Service, the Monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the late winter and early spring seasons, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance. NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2017. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

We took Scenic Tour: 1 hr 20 min; $8/adult; 723 steps; 1/2 mile; "moderately strenuous". We even took turns carrying my 30+ pound granddaughter, and it wasn't that bad. You must make this a part of your Black Hills experience!

Great cave tour. Took almost 2-hours lots of stairs. Guide was super. Small tour group of 8 people made it really nice.

“Amazing”

Took 2 tours into the cave. Amazing sites. Park ranger really knew her stuff. Lots of history about the area, people who discovered the cave, and general cave info. Second tour had 723 stair steps! Fairly easy walking tour. Make sure you wear a coat and hat, as it is always around 40 degrees in the cave.

“Excellent”

We were on the 1st tour of the day (get there early, and ask). There were only 6 of us on the tour, so the Ranger spent extra time pointing things out and explaining things. Made original reservation a week in advance for tour time, but were able to change to the 1st (unadvertised) tour when we arrived.

“One of the highlights of our trip!”

I tour guide was so entertaining and made the tour exciting. (I think his name was Kevin) We went to the Black Hills in early October and I would highly recommend this time of year to avoid all of the crowds.
