We were staying in the Marigny neighborhood during our recent first time to NOLA so checking out Frenchmen Street was easy. Most of it is just a couple of blocks east of the French Quarter. About two (or three) blocks are literally lined with places to eat and drink plus listen to great music. Some look somewhat shabby and others are more up market looking but the music is great. Snug Harbor is probably the most well known pub. Some of the pubs have a cover charge, especially on weekends but most are free most of the time although it is expected that you would order a drink for each set of music you are enjoying. We spent time in the Spotted Cat which was a very simple place and also D.B.A. which was a nicer looking place with an incredible number of beers and wines. We also ate at the well known Praline Connection which offers soul versions of New Orleans cuisine. If you are in New Orleans and interested in local music then you ought to walk over to Frenchmen and check out these places.

Frenchman street is a great place to hear some good music, especially jazz. You can really mix things up in this area with the locals. There are a ton of live bands playing in this area.

Some of the bars are free with a laid back atmosphere. So have cover charges that tend to have a more high maintenance crowd. Either way you go you will sure have fun on this street.

The spotted cat is definitely worth checking out.

This is a great group of clubs and cafes. I was able to see 10 acts in 2 blocks. It is a short cab ride from Canal street. There is a site frenchmenst(dot)com that has a good list of the clubs and bands. I live near New Orleans and this street is the best.

A local took me here on a Monday night and a Wednesday night. Both nights there was amazing music playing in every bar we went into, and yes, people were dancing in the street!

The Spotted Cat is small, cramped, and you pay $5 for a beer, but you are guarenteed to hear great live music at close quarters, whatever your taste. I don't listen to jazz at home, but live, it rocks.
Cafe Negril had Mardi Gras Indians playing- this is music you can't hear anywhere else in the world.
Even the Japanese sake bar had a three piece band in the corner. And they do great edamame beans.
Take a taxi from the French Quarter- its not far. Walk down the street and see what you like the sound of.
