I have read many of the reviews posted here about St. Vincent's. My sister and I stayed here this past week the three days following Mardi Gras. It is a bit of a walk to get to the French Quarter, but the grounds and grande old building are BEAUTIFUL! It used to be an Infant Orphan Asylum and has so many photographs from the older days, old painted posters from the Civil War, fifteen foot windows, just magnificent.
Now, to all you who had ney to say...it is an old building. It is in New Orleans, one of the muggiest places on the planet. You can only do so much to make a place built more than 150 years ago look immaculate. Do not expect The Plaza. You are booking a hostel.
We had fresh linens, towels, wash clothes, and a ceiling fan. The shower had hot water and the door had a working lock and chain.
The staff made a mistake with our deposit but gladly rectified it before the end of our stay and could NOT have been friendlier!!!!
We had NO BUGS in our room (private room, 2 Queen beds, bathroom included). It had obviously been freshly cleaned and linened.
I did find VERY interesting some of the paranormal history of the hostel. We had a few experiences, and heard of many more....from guests and overheard from staff ( yes, I am sorry, I eavesdropped....curiosity!). It added to the charm and history of the place.
Although Mom thought it was a bit dodgy after looking at the reviews of others, MY EXPERIENCE was overall WAAAAYYY POSITIVE!!!
I am thinking about moving to NOLA and would definitely look to St. Vincent's for weekly or monthly rates to start off my stay.
The Garden District (where SV is located, border), is beautiful....many quaint shops and eateries and a close walk to Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.
St. Vincent's was, to me, the epitome of olde world N'awlins charm and grace. The other guests I met where friendly and wished they'd had a private room. When you stay in a dorm setting, you must expect other people to be dirty....not everyone showers, washes the counter, or cleans up after themselves the way you do. If you don't want that, GET A PRIVATE ROOM. It is tedious trying to clean up after 80 individuals at all hours of the day and book rezzies and work the front desk and refresh linens for 75 rooms and answer the phones and take care of breakfast and look after the vending machine and pool and mopping and vacuuming!!!
Give the staff a break. I was happy to get warm friendly faces with a smile through obvious tire.
Thank you for an unforgettable holiday and I hope to see you again soon.....MGR.: if you are reading this, please respond with an email so I may contact you about long-stay options in the near future! Ta!!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- St. Vincent Guest House is Under New Management!!! As of December 1, 2013 the guest house will be operated under a new management team that is dedicated to improving both the aesthetics and overall condition of the entire establishment. Steps are being taken to bring this beautiful and historical building to its fullest potential and offer our guests a wonderful experience and comfortable stay. St. Vincent's is not a full service hotel, it is more of hostel/quaint budget hotel that is both economical and located in one of the best areas in the city of New Orleans (the Lower Garden District). First opened in 1861 as a orphanage, the building has a distinct and colorful history that is worth exploring. The lobby is adorned with photos that reflect the history and show the building's usage over the last 100+ years. Each room has an individual decor and design scape that will make you feel as though you are walking into an era of Nola history gone by... The grounds are well kept and offer several areas for outdoor seating for morning coffee, an evening cigar or just great conversations... Our staff have been trained and are dedicated to providing each guest with the highest level of customer services with courtesy and a smile. Although there are not a great deal of amenities available, every guest will find that the Guest House offers a tremendous value for the price. We have both private sleeping rooms as well as dormitories available. There have been several negative reviews that have been posted in the past and those reviews have been duly noted and taken into consideration for action as we move towards improvements... Likewise, there have been several positive reviews from guests who have enjoyed their stay and the experience at the Guest House; and for that we are thankful! We look forward to this new era at St. Vincent's and welcome each and every guest with open arms... ... more less
