Staying at Treetops meant stepping out into a magical world of unspoilt nature and peace and quiet. Exquisite setting, even more beautiful than the pictures, a lovely secluded bungalow with an incredible view, a comfortable bed, great outdoor shower and magnificent food. I could have stayed longer: fabulous beach walks that offer a range of different types of scenery, a magnificent swimming beach right in front of the property, and some interesting places around if you had a car and want to explore. I reached Treetops easily by bus, it was a comfortable and not overly long trip and super cheap. One has to get the timing just right to make this work, but Karen and Jack gave me all the info I needed to make it happen (although they were very sceptical about me using the bus beforehand, probably fearing that city brat response to the journey). Yes, as some reviews state, it is true that you need to amuse yourself at Treetops, but that is clear from the listing - if you are looking for group activities, there are plenty resorts who offer these in Costa Rica, rather book there. Two challenges of which travellers should be aware: 1. Wifi is available just for short bursts during the day, which did not matter for me on this trip, but it might matter in some situations, and helpful to know beforehand in order to manage expectations at home before you leave. 2. There is nowhere to eat in the village after 4/6 (depending on the day), except for Karen's 5-star-meal, which needs to be booked beforehand and is a treat you would not want to have every day if you stay for a week. It is not possible to cook a meal in the bungalow, so the best plan is to have a late lunch and stock up on cold evening snacks and drinks in the fridge. This works well after Karen's amazing breakfast of fresh fruit, a variety of baked goods and jams as well as eggs and traditional Costa Rican fare.

Room Tip: Personally I would choose one of the bungalows over the B&B room, the privacy is worth the small...

A unique experience. Private dining in the treetoops with mangotrees full of howlermonkey's on one side and a beautiful ocean vista on the other. The spot alone is worth the visit but wait till you've tasted Karen's cooking. Skilled and passionate about her food she understands flavors and balance. The five course meal with locally sourced super fresh ingredients was spot on. On top of that Karen and her husband are super friendly and great hosts. They make killer cocktails as well and it is very reasonably priced so if you are in the neighborhood check it out. Reservations only (24hrs in advance).

Karen and Jack welcomed us for lunch. The view was spectacular. We were offered drinks and a three course meal. Excellent. The food was delicious and Karen is amazing especially with her tiny kitchen. I don't know how she does it! The we had fish and couscous with zucchini and everything was seasoned to perfection. The chocolate banana ice cream was an excellent finish. Thank you Jack and Karen for a wonderful afternoon.

Karen does a wonderful job preparing meals, but that is where the niceties end. We stayed four nights at the bungalow (we originally booked five but left early). After dark (6pm) there is absolutely nothing to do. The wifi only works at the main house not at the bungalows. If you want to play a board game or cards there are no tables and chairs, in the bungalow, you have to sit on the bed. Not even a reading lamp. The mattress is only a half mattress and very uncomfortable. If you kept the shutters open at night, with the lights on, then you are invaded by no see ums, or close them and stifle. The road getting into the place is so bad that you can not navigate it at night anyway even if you were to find someplace to go to. And be aware of the "designer kitchenette" in the bungalow, it consists of six pieces of silverware, a few dishes and bowls and a tiny fridge. No stove or hot plate, not even a can opener!
Jack booked a fishing trip with one of the locals for us, and we were charged $325 plus another 13% tax, even though we paid cash! Oh and as for privacy be aware that Jack will be watching you through his binoculars!

We appreciate all input and comments. All we can say is that this couple did not stop complaining about the roads, the heat, the accommodations (not only here but in their previous stay) the bugs and insects of the jungle.
Our bungalows are promoted as " ROMANTIC & PRIVATE" being close to nature and right in front of the sea on 15 acres of Tropical Fruit Plantation . Our guests from all over the world have had a wonderful time ( including diplomats and Hollywood personalities). The kitchenette does consists of a small office type ref and supplies for two guests. The bed as shown and described in pics is a queen size complete with designer linens. The wifi and telephone service is in the lodge (as most small B & B's are)

We were recommended to visit San Juanillo by backpackers that we met during our trip to Guanacaste and were very excited to see it. We were driving from Montezuma all day without 2 year old so when we finally got there, we were exhausted and looking forward to checking into a room. We saw that Treetop had availability on bookings.com but since we had no internet service, we could not book online. We arrived at the gate entrance at 8pm and rang the bell twice. No one answered so we opened the gate and drove in to see if we could find the reception desk. As my husband got out of the car, an older gentleman ran out with a flashlight yelling profuse language and asking what the F we wanted. My husband explained that he had rang the bell but since no one answered and that we were just looking for a room. The gentleman kept on yelling to get the F out and leave his property. I've never had such horrible, rude service in my life. I would not recommend this b&b to anyone. We were so excited to stay at this spot with our son, only to be cursed out and yelled. Worst experience we have ever had.

After speaking with our non-speaking English watchman it is correct that the time was 8PM. Very dark after sunset at 5:40PM. The main gate was absolutely closed with two signs in English & Spanish " CLOSED" & the other " PLEASE RING BELL AND WAIT TO BE ATTENDED". I was told that these people opened the double gate and drove in. There were no lights on either in the lodge or outside. We were CLOSED and after a long hard day we were in bed sleeping, our normal work day starts a 5AM. Our excellent night watchman after many years of working for us thought that they could possibly be thieves. He said that there was no conversation and told them to leave in Spanish. They left and deliberately drove over our white picketed driveway fence and broke it! These people obviously do not read English or Spanish and have no respect for others property. We have been in business for 24 years and have an excellent reputation for hospitality and service.
