Can there be a lovely temple in Bali without thousands of tourists, a hundred souvenir shops outside, touts, guides and an overcrowded car park? Batukaru surprises in many ways - off the main track, the drive to the temple is gorgeous ... through woods, villages and un-touristy rice terraces. When you get there, the emptiness and simplicity surprise. There is a misty, jungly feel to this quiet temple (moss-covered everywhere). The weather also is a lot cooler, being high up in the mountain. The temple itself is not impressive compared to others in Bali. But more than makes up for it with the silence, the setting and the journey to and fro.
Entrance fee includes rental of the sarong. There are no shops of any sort. Toilet (RP2000) is basic. Temple area is small, and can be covered in 30 min.
