Sister, visiting Lake Oswego, Or, from Marquette, Mi, was here the month of Feb,lending support during recovery from cancer surgeries. With healing and recovery underway, and being of Finnish ancestry, we looked forward to wearing tourist hats to explore Astoria, then down hwy 101 as time and distance would allow. We selected the Cannery Pier Hotel based on other traveler experiences and reviews.

Dissatisfying issues experienced by others was not ours. We were awed by the magnificent beauty and the kindness of staff. An ad mentioned the view to be a "working river." We were awestruck by the closeness, the size of freighters traveling the river seemingly faster than we could find the camera! The natural beauty was exciting.

We appreciated the thoughtful and lovely things like the room heated fireplace, bathrobes and toiletries (items one usually has to pack), the fridge and microwave set in modern decor, and the most comfortable beds and views ever.

The afternoon wine and cheese time was lovely, the breakfast offerings complete. We were close to shopping, eateries and attractions. The nearby Maritime Museum was wonderful. The rain soaked us to the bones, the next day sun and blue skies and snow in the mountains had us laughing.

The Cannery Pier Hotel was exquisite and charming. Mini lounges were fun finds, all with river views.Hall decor was a mix of historic photos, paintings and bookshelves, overlooking the beautiful main lounge area and windowed scenic walls. It was magnificent!

Bar, lounge or restaurant wasn't missed. Such hotel features may be desirable, but at the expense of peace, quiet, and joy of God's beauty. The quiet, serenity and view was for me, medicinal.

The staff was kindness overload. Amnesties were explained on arrival and reminders made throughout our 2 day stay. Offerings of help was there for us for every possible need. The front desk was our compass for places, ideas and suggestions! Time was taken to help map our plans and make driving easier.

The one and only unhappy experience was having to leave. We can't wait to return for more beauty and kindness overload. Our thanks! Susie and LaVerne

Room Tip: Best: Every space but hallways are river views! Best: Absence of bar and restaurant in exchange for serene unobstructed views. Next time I would ask for ground floor for nearness to sauna.

Cannery Pier Hotel lives up to it's remarkable location at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. Built on a pier that formerly housed a fish cannery, this hotel is right on the edge of the shipping lanes and to say that it has a "view" is a major understatement. With its soaring glass walls, multifaceted profile and balconies in every room so close to the huge tankers that glide out to sea, guest have quite an immersion experience. This is one classy hotel. While the architecture reflects the historical context of early Astoria, the decor is chic, contemporary and unquestionably comfortable. The unique structure allows for numerous coves and corners, balconies or open sunlit areas, all with these remarkable views. I have never been in a hotel in which the common areas feel so personal, intimate and inviting.

Each of the large rooms is designed on a bias so one never has that boxed in feeling of a standard hotel room. Rooms have window seats, gas fireplaces, balconies over the water, and half doors to to the enormous bathroom areas that share the view with even the shower and enormous contemporary claw foot tub. There is a loveseat as well as a small table and chairs, and a mini bar with a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot. The king bed is glorious and the robes, linens and towels are all very nice.

The hot tub has windows on two sides so you are never without views of Astoria, ships, and the Columbia. The sauna is always kept hot, unlike so many other hotels. Both are kept clean and well-maintained and there are heaps of thick towels. I did not use the exercise room but peeked in to see that it was also open to views and light. The massage area looked inviting as well, and the prices are lower than in similar establishments.

The staff, always professionally dressed, could not have been more gracious. You really do feel like a guest when the nightly wine and cheese hour rolls around. Finger sandwiches are offered as well with Astoria's remarkable local lox. Fresh baked cookies appear at 8 pm. The breakfasts are equally pleasant with hot waffles, local pastries, items to toast, yogurt, cereals and a genuinely lovely fruit bowl with all the "good stuff". There is 24 hour hot coffee and tea, including a wooden box of high quality Yumi teas to choose from. It is no surprise that the room amenities are also generous and high quality.

The pier is located right on the four mile riverfront walking trail and near to the Red Building which holds a small wine tasting shop as well as a high quality dining spot, the Bridgewater Cafe. You may also, of course, be chauffeured to any restaurant in town in a vintage Cadillac. Bikes are available and offer a fun way to tour the entire walking path. Astoria is filled with interesting things to see and do, but frankly, the Cannery Pier is so comfortable, comforting, and scenic that on this most recent visit, my husband and I were content to lounge around the hotel for several days, seldom leaving at all -- it's that good! By the end of our stay, we felt renewed and relaxed but also that we had visited an exotic and worthy destination.

Room Tip: All rooms have balconies over the water and are equally desirable.

Wine and cheese when I arrive? Wonderful! Binoculars in the room, love it. Overall I think they have done a nice job. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful.
Be sure to take advantage of the classic car ride into town.

We just returned from our third stay at the Cannery Pier hotel. From the check in to the check out two days later, the hotel staff made our visit fun and friendly. The rooms are spacious and clean and the view of the river and the interstate bridge and ships is superb. The shuttle to local restaurants in their vintage cars is a nice added touch. This hotel just keeps giving us reasons to visit Astoria again.

My husband and I chose the Cannery Pier Hotel to celebrate our 10th anniversay. We can't think of a better place to have celebrated. Everything from making the reservation to check out was outstanding. Every one of the staff we encountered went above and beyond just courteous and nice. We were treated like they really wanted us to be there and make our stay as memorable as possible. The continental breakfast had quality items. They had coffee, tea and lemon ice water out in the afternoon, and a beautiful wine and cheese hour that also included smoked salmon canapes. Let's not forget the fresh baked cookies in the evening to send you off to bed with. Their suggestions for restaurants were wonderful and they drove you there in one of their classic cars. We happened to have been there during nasty weather, but it didn't deter us from having an exceptional time. We will definitely be back to enjoy what they have to offer in better weather. Wonderful views, great beds, excellent service...what more could you ask for?

Room Tip: We had a room on the 4th floor with a great view of the river and bridge. Saw freighters going by while taking a shower! Awesome!
