I was able to get a table quickly on a Wednesday night at 6:30 without having to wait. At first, I felt the imoreimpre that this may have been more of a lunch place but I was pleseanple wrong on that.

The server was helpful since I was a first timer and explained the menu to me. I liked how everything was laid out and while it is a BBQ place, I feel like the restaurant did a good job of separation from the typical which I do appreciate.

I tried the brisket cut style, the cornbread and the grits. For me, the winner of the three was the grits and I was hesitant to try them to begin with. The brisket was good, it wasn't in the Texas fat saucey style I prefer and had a burnt-end quality to it, never the less, I did enjoy it and this ain't Texas either. I would have eaten twice the amount, not because I'm gluttonous but because it still was that good. The cornbread dish, ah, well, okay but in alright with that.

I travel for business so the quick turn around was great. A lot of servers seem to forget solo diners just wanna get in and get out fast and the server was well aware of this and it is much appreciated.

Kudos, I liked it!

Our 1st experience was in Fernandina @ Gilbert’s Underground. THE BEST BBQ
Visited Gilbert’s on Southside with a group of five. Everyone was very happy with their selections. The burnt ends were so moist and tender. PERFECT.
Only con would be the noise level. Difficult to carry on conversations.

Visiting Mayo clinic for a checkup I previously read about Gilbert's. Last year we were rushed to get home so we missed out... and boy did we. As we approached the restaurant, we noted someone (Gilbert?) outside tending to the huge smoker. The lot was rather empty but not for long. We were promptly seated at a homey food hall with bluesy music playing. Our server explained the menu and made a few recommendations. My wife and I decided to order the same item, the pulled pork sandwich, opting for that instead of the platter (we never order the same thing so we can share taste experience). Our appetizer was shear heavenly Jalapeno Biscuits which came with house made pickled vegetables, pepper jam and maple butter. They were crumbly with the right amount of heat. Near perfection as I love (and to this day can't recreate) the dryness of a biscuit that absorbs all the moisture from your mouth. Dinner came with two sides each and thinly sliced pickles. Noodles and sweet slaw were sot on and complemented the main course, the pulled pork. six house made sauces sat at the table and we tried each one. Peppery and smoky, they enhanced the flavor of the pork and had a natural goodness. I am a true city kid from New York metro area, but the hit for me was the side of dressing. It took me back to memories of my childhood Thanksgivings as my uncle prepared turkey for our extended family and him making cornbread stuffing he cooked inside the bird. And did I detect chopped chicken liver in it or was it just the blissful memory filling my mouth.
I have to give props to our young male server who was attentive and unobtrusive while providing super service. I wish I could remember the young man's name to give proper kudos (If I do remember I will supplement this to give credit where credit is due). Well, in the end there was too much food to eat and we took the remainder home or did we save some and those delicious biscuits so we could have a second chance at this meal. The price point was totally fair and surprising. A fair price for an exceptional meal. No wonder Gilbert has opened four new restaurants in the Jacksonville Beach area. We felt very much at home and not at all like we were customers visiting but friends stopping by to "socialize". With food like this, we will definitely stop in to socialize whenever in the area.

A few of my friends recommended this spot for dinner so we all met up. The service was perfect! We called ahead to alert the restaurant of my friends severe peanut allergy and they were more than accommodating.

Our servers name was "Kevin" all of his food and drink recommendations were awesome we tried a little of everything!!! My favorite app was the fried chicken skins and I ordered the catfish meal!

I would definitely recommend this place and please ask for Kevin his service and knowledge of the menu options made our experience double awesome!

Group of 5 had great meals. Service was very good and a nice atmosphere. Unexpected as from outside it looks pretty unremarkable. Truly enjoyed all aspects. Recommended.
