“Ancient Egyptphiles - This Is Your Place”

This is a quiet treasure of Philadelphia. Their Egyptian collection is one of the best in the world. This is not a whiz-bang kind of place, rather a serious collection of ancient artifacts meticulously displayed.

It is a nice field trip for elementary schools but do not go when it is warm out because it is way too hot inside.

“Just like visiting a museum in Egypt”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

I was completely unprepared for the vastness and excellence of this museum's exhibits on the ancient cultures of Egypt, Rome, Etruscia and Greece. I spent four hours there and didn't even penetrate the surface of these treasures.

The provenance of these wonders is the late nineteenth and early twentieth century excavations undertaken by the university. Most of these have passed into recorded finds long ago published and to many forgotten until you walk through these galleries.

The exhibit on Amarna is like being in the Cairo museum. The throne room of Merenptah is spectacular. In the Roman exhibit there are many unusual items including a bust of Claudia Octavia and a lead coffin from the Republican period which is very rare. The Etruscian displays are very good and a section is devoted to the Etruscian language.

I will definitely return to see more of this marvellous museum on my next trip to Philadelphia.

So much to see! Plan on coming back over and over again. Beautiful pieces, helpful employess and a wonderful gift shop. My kids attended summer camp there and loved it! I hope one of them chooses to hold a wedding there in upper Egypt someday...
