For a local, small town type of museum, this is a lovely building and grounds and does a wonderful job of the exhibits it gets. It would be nice to get some of the more famous items that its northern neighbor in Santa Barbara gets, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits I've attended here and also appreciate the space given to local artists and events to help them along. Also, special events on the museum grounds like El Dia De Los Muertos celebrations and others set this location apart and keeps its heart beating within our community vs. it feeling like an operation for the elite. Art is for all and this museum definitely does its all to touch all Venturans' sense of art appreciation. The staff is also very friendly.

This was our first time visiting a museum where close to 50% of the exhibits were outside due to the Californian weather. We found that it covered the local history and had some modern images on display also.

We visited the newly reopened museum today. Parts of the museum are very appealing; the rock wall in front, the mosaics and murals, the wonderful art collection. There is an educational area for children. In a separate room there is the display of historical figures; not local.
I like that they used artists for displays such as the jellyfish made by a local artist.
Why do I feel something is missing?
There is a smattering of local history, but it has been diminished considerably. The area about the Chumash is good, and out in the back they have a Chumash style house, so that's covered.
I would like to see more vintage photos of Ventura County history and get more of a feel of what it was like there years ago.
I feel they did not use the space they have, which is considerable, very efficiently.
I was a bit disappointed in the museum shop; usually shops of this sort have wonderful and unique local items. For instance; I would have liked to have a postcard or booklet of the art collection they show. With so many local artists and artisans, why aren't they represented here instead of the logo t-shirts and cups?
Having said all that, we enjoyed a nice little visit to this local museum.

or grand children. Enclosed, so it's safe from the street. Areas just for the children. It's not so big that you feel overwhelmed. Good exhibits and the docents are very knowledgeable.
