Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

Went because of trip advisor. Great cookies. Don't get more then one for a snack. They are like bombs of chocolate love.

“WOW!!!!”
Reviewed 19 February 2012

OK, for all you cookie-lovers this is a message for you: visit Levain Bakery next time you are in NYC! I cannot begin to describe the sensation I felt when I took the first bite of my cookie...

Cookie: HUGE, delicious and amazing! They have 4 types of cookies: double-chocolate-chip , oat& raisin, peanut butter&chocolate-chip, and walnut-chocolate-chip. We chose peanut the butter&chocolate-chip and walnut-chocolate-chip. Heavenly!

Location: In a basement without any seating, so prepare to take it to-go.

Tips: Order a coffee as well as the cookies are really sugary...

“Cookie heaven”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

It's so small, you could almost miss it and you can barely fit inside. Their cookies, however, make their presence known. They are delicious, and yes, they are rather heavy to hold. But, don't worry, you won't be holding them long. My only comment is that this listing as #2 on the restaurant list is a bit deceiving--this is not a restaurant. You cannot eat there or even linger, grab your cookie, coffee, and go. But put this on your list of places to visit--and save room these cookies.

Fantastic cookies well worth the visit, but make sure you keep your eyes peeled as very small shop and would be easy to miss it, the line of people waiting to be served is the only give away

“well worth the trip”
Reviewed 14 February 2012

After reading the reviews, had it on my 'list of things to do' in the 5 days I was in NY. On the 5th day, I hadn't been, so I skipped b'fast, hopped on the subway, literally ran to the bakery and ordered a dozen cookies. I didn't know I'd be carrying around a 20 lb box!!!!! Ran back to the sub, made it to the hotel just in time for our tour, and didn't actually even open the box until we were on the plane. Wow. split one with my daughter, and it was amazing - they look more like large biscuits, but the taste really is like nothing I've ever had. They should make up a new name for this delicacy, because 'cookie' doesn't quite describe it. I've come home, and cut them in 1/2 (probably should have done 1/4) to send with the kids lunches. Happy Valentine's Day :)
