The star rating is based upon how it compares with other places in New York, not other places in the United States that I have been. It is relatively inexpensive and a true three bedroom apartment, with one bedroom being on one end of the apartment, and the other two being on the other side for added privacy. We did not have a good start to our stay as the owners overbooked our apartment for the first night, and we had to stay in a two bedroom near to this apartment, which made for an uncomfortable first night. The owners though helped us move to the other apartment the next day. So if you do rent from this owner, you might want to make sure that you would be willing to stay at one of their other apartments listed on tripadvisor for part of the time as they could be in the habit of overbooking, although this may also have been an isolated event. I've stayed in New York in hotels and apartments many times, and the apartment bathrooms are just not going to be as clean as hotel bathrooms, and I don't expect them to be. One of this apartment's bathrooms had a mild smell to it, and water would not drain well, pooling in one area of the tub, and it had some tile damage, but neither were what I would classify as dirty. Very importantly though, this apartment is in a building with no businesses immediately around it, and it is a first floor apartment, and that in itself is worth at least three stars in New York. I could sleep decently in the East Village. There are horrible apartments trying to be passed off as vacation rentals in New York City on multiple sites, and this is not one of them. It is as they advertise on the site, and that was important to me.
