“A little bit of heaven in NYC.”
Reviewed 18 September 2010

This place is fabulous. Just fabulous. Great location. There is not one thing I could add to my stay at Ivy Terrace. In fact the only problem you will encounter with the Ivy Terrace is not booking your room soon enough to get a room. I don't care how much money you have to spend be it $250 a night or $2500 a night this is the place to stay. I was so overcome with joy when I walked into the Greenwich Room I could cry. The photos that their website provides are exactly what you will get. And I could live for three days on what they provided in the fridge....free. If you want more I ordered from the Indian Restaurant a few doors down and THAT kept me full for the evenings of the three nights.

This was our first visit to New York and the icing on the cake was staying here in the Waverly Room - we LOVED it. The location was perfect for shopping at Bloomingdales, jogging round Central Park, hopping on the subway or eating at a cafe (one of our favourites was Le Pain Quotidien). Arriving at midnight - hungry and exhausted - the yummy bagels and cereal provided our first meal in NY. We loved returning at the end of the day to our home away from home and the free internet service was much appreciated. If it hadn't been for the insomniac pacing the creaking floors above us, it would have been perfect - but hey, who needs perfection? We have recommended Ivy Terrace to all our friends and have told the insomniacs to take the rooms on the ground floor!

My partner and I have traveled in many places both here and in Europe, and we've never been as comfortable as we were here. The room, and the bed were just like being home! No details was left undone....from the breakfast treats in the kitchen (which were more than just "breakfast ") to the linens on the bed, to the service. Everything was clean and friendly and I felt as if I was staying at a friends home rather than a hotel. If you are coming to the city for a week or a night.....You HAVE to stay here!

We had 8 wonderful nights in the Rose Room mid August. Everything was as advertised and we found the room to be very clean, comfortable and well equipped. The breakfast supplied was good quality and sufficient for our needs. At night we found it so quiet that it was impossible not to have a good nights sleep. The location could not be bettered. Close to everything (including subway), but with a slightly more neighbourhood feel to the street outside. We also found a number of good restaurants in the surrounding area. Given the price, you would be crazy to stay at a hotel when you can enjoy the Ivy Terrace, especially with the benefit of being able to cook for yourself in the full kitchen.

Ivy Terrace was the perfect location for my wife's first visit to New York. It felt like we were in our own little studio apartment rather than staying in a hotel or a B&B. We stayed in the Victoria Suite and found it spacious, comfortable, and quiet. We never heard our neighbors at all, although we felt like we were making a lot of noise ourselves going up and down the stairs. Our room was a 3rd-floor walkup, but it didn't present any specific challenges, even for my wife who was 6 months pregnant at the time.

The room was plenty spacious enough, with an average-sized bathroom and a large suite featuring a well-supplied kitchen. The air conditioning was very welcome in August, and the water, TV, free WiFi and everything else worked perfectly. The room decor followed the "Victorian" theme in a fun way, and the place in general had that kind of "old world charm" as I like to call it, that not-new places have.

Overall, it wasn't the stereotypical bed & breakfast experience with a doting owner constantly checking in on you, but we liked it for that. We didn't really avail ourselves of any concierge-style advice from Jeff & Vinessa, but they made it clear that they were a phone call away if we needed anything. You can also choose to save $25/night and skip the maid service if you don't need your room made up every day. The fridge was stocked with plenty of breakfast items—cereal, eggs, English muffins, etc.— and the kitchen was everything you could want. You could have cooked Thanksgiving dinner in there if you wanted to. A particularly nice touch was the delicious blackberry brandy served with compliments of the hosts.

If you're looking to get away from Times Square but still be in midtown, the location is actually a great one. It's an easy walk to Central Park and an easy subway ride down to SoHo, the East Village, or wherever you want to go. (Of course, there isn't really a bad location in Manhattan, is there?) Even the traffic noise, shockingly, was not really noticeable at night, despite the long backups for the 59th St. Bridge at rush hour.

So all in all, if you just want to have a nice space to yourself, without anyone intruding on you, this is the place to be. I'd liken it to being in a restaurant where the waiter unobtrusively anticipates what you need and seems nearly invisible, rather than interrupting you every 15 minutes to ask if everything's okay.
