“Serene and Delicious”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

Hangawi is one of the my favorite restaurants in NYC. I took my husband there for the first time on my birthday. He is a carnivorous man and he really enjoyed the food. The ambiance and decor make for a memorable dining experience.

“wonderful food, handsome interior”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

I enjoyed Hangawi. The food is superior, as is the friendliness and efficiency of the staff.

The wonderful food could not overshadow, however, the dining experience.

The one big negative, and the reason I will not hurry back again, is high noise levels. The restaurant's vertical surfaces, and most all the horizontals, are entirely of hard materials. So it is really, excessively noisy.

And though the table arrangements are pleasant and interesting, we were seated next to sucessive pairs of loud, abrasive-voiced young women trying to impress loud young male dates. And having to ovehear their conversations while we tried to enjoy our own -- one pair were medical residents, with the male recounting what kinds of drugs he had been distributing, and in what quantities, to particular friends -- was extremely unpleasant.

“interesting atmosphere, unusual food”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

This is a korean vegetarian restaurant, very nice interior, more upmarket than other offerrings in Manhattan's Koreatown on 32nd street.

I have dined here twice and base my review on visits from October 2011 and Cecember 2011.

The decor is beautiful, exposed wood, almost feels like a buddhist temple.

There are two things that I think potential patrons should be warned about:

1. you have to remove your shoes when you enter, they have a nice storage area for the shoes, though really no where to sit down while taking your shoes off, which can be awkward, particularly for a mobility impaired diner.

2. The tables are sunken, no seats, sit on cushions, tables fixed to the floor. I noticed a number of patrons having difficulty sitting down and getting up, particularly people who are overweight or have mobility problems.

I enjoyed the setting, felt exotic, but some people may not be comfortable.

The food is pretty good, perhaps a bit inconsistent. Prices are fair but not great. You are paying for the atmosphere more than the food. The service also was a bit brusque.

When I made a reservation I was actually asked to agree to be out by a certain time (2 hour window). We ended up tring the tasting menu with multiple courses and I ended up worrying about getting out in time as I had agreed.

The tasting menu was, shall we say.....interesting. Very unusual items like deep fried ginseng.

I enjoyed the place the first time, second time not so much, not eager to go back.

So it's a good option for someone who is serious about vegeterian food and comfortable with taking off their shoes in an exotic setting.

“Never thought Korean could be vegetarian”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

If you're sick of veggie burgers and the usual vegetarian fare, this is a good place to try. The place is quite elegant with a zen feeling and the food is actually pretty decent, even though Korean food is mostly known for the meat and seafood.

“Super lunch experience”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

Nice, unique interior with "sunken" tables, good service. If you want meat and potatoes this place is not for you but if you like Korean food or if you're a vegetarian, you will love this place! Superbly prepared food, terrific menu, fresh ingredients, definitely worth a visit!
