First off this may be the loudest restaurant in NYC. Not sure if it is the 'boxy' shape so tourists be forewarned. Has a real french feel with the old musty wall to wall mirrors. The service was exceptional - attentive but not too attentive. Even changed the paper table cloth before dessert. I would recommend the steak or moule frites dinner. The dessert menu has many French standards that you can't go wrong with either. The wine list has many affordable choices as well. This place is always busy but there as many New Yorkers as tourists which makes for an authentic NYC experience.

We enjoyed our breakfast at Balthazar. I was with a group of friends, several of which consider themselves "foodies". We started with deliciously brewed coffee and ordered the home made doughnuts. We thought they were going to be little tiny puffs but they were whole doughnuts, with granulated sugar. Delicious! Light! You must get them!! The person next to me ordered soft boiled egg with "soldiers" thinking the soldiers were going to be sausages but they were little potato sticks. Very good though. I ordered just "eggs any way" with homefries and toast and even this plain dish was very good. The eggs in puff pastry looked delicious. The prices were reasonable for NY ($10-20) and you can make it as elaborate or simple as you want. Very lively atmosphere but not noisey.

After hearing such wonderful things about this famous spot, I had high hopes for our lunch. I kept it simple with the goat cheese and caramelized onion tart. This I thought would be an easy dish to nail. However, the tart lacked flavor and lack of onion. The moules frites got an 'it was okay' and the Balthazar salad lacked flavor. Sadly disappointed.

THE best waffles: sour cream hazelnut Belgian waffles served with warm berries...mmm! No need for syrup. I ordered bacon, and some hash browns (looked like cubed cut new potatoes), these were great! Highly recommend this place for breakfast. Not hard to get to from the subway.

This place is great, good food and really good fun. A wonderful place to people watch as well - very famous writer was at the next table, it's a wide mix of people - giving the restaurant a wonderful energy. It certainly has a old world New York vibe going on. Service couldn't be better and the food was lovely, I had the duck shepherds pie - yum!!
