Owner description: Since 1992, Big Apple Greeter has been pairing visitors with New York City volunteer Greeters who explore the city together, free of charge, on foot or by public transportation. Warm and welcoming, a Greeter meets up to six people and shares his/her personal knowledge of New York City's culture, people and diverse neighborhoods. A Greeter is not a professional tour guide. Instead, a Greeter is a new friend who is ready to spend two-to-four hours sharing the city he/she knows and loves.

“Watch out for this Company!!! Don't do it”
Reviewed 11 February 2012

We did everything we asked even tho they asked alot of personal stuff about exactly where we were staying etc, we called and confirmed when we got there . They confirmed they would be in our lobby on a certain day and time and NEVER showed. They knew both of our cell numbers the hotel number and our emails. So LOTS of ways to reach us. We waited almost 2 hours of our valuable NY time and nothing!!!
We called their phone number asking for help. We emailed them . No return call . No apology . NOTHING!

What a 'Welcome to NY'

Don't waste your time. Go to a legit tour company.

“Brilliant and different way to see New York”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

We asked to see parts of New York that we would otherwise miss as tourists. Our greeter did exactly that for us. He showed us how to use the subway with confidence and then we were off to Brooklyn where he lived. Looking back at Manhatten from Brooklyn was magic! Our greeter gave us a real insight into life as a New Yorker - it was fascinating.

My husband and I were in New York for the 3rd time, but the 1st time with our two boys. I had arranged to spend the morning with our greeter on our first full day in the city. It was a great way to get our bearings.

Although the weather was steaming hot and we were on our feet for about 4 hours, it was sufficiently good to keep our teenagers engaged (although they were flagging a bit by the end).

I would certainly use a greeter again. Couldn't believe it was free! It was one of the best things we did in New York.

“Best introduction to New York possible”
Reviewed 26 January 2012

Our greeter Richard was friendly, informative and an unending wealth of knowledge of all things NYC. Richard had emailed us in advance to ask if we would like to tour the village or Central park, we chose central park.

Richard was waiting for us when we hit the lobby 5 min early, armed with a mta map for us. He spent 5 minutes explaining the subway (information that was simple and straight forward). Then it was off to the subway where he assisted us in buying 7 day met cards.

We walked around the south east side of the park, Richard sharing his personal experiences as well as park history. We stopped for lunch at the boat house, after a hearty meal Richard spent 45 minutes showing us news paper clippings and telling us stories, this is a side of New York that we never would of seen/heard about.

After our break we wandered with Richard through the south west part of the park. We parted company to head off to FAO Swartz, while Richard said we should keep a look out for him if we were in the village.

“Absolutely astounding service and our greeter was so lovely, it was like meeting up with an old friend.”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

Even though I requested a greeter in February 2011 for our trip in November, I never really expected to actually get someone on Thanksgiving! About a week before our journey, I had an email to say we had a greeter! Immense! To think that this lovely lady (you know who you are, Audrey Drillich!) gave up over 8 (yes, I did say "8!") hours of her Thanksgiving celebrations, for free and for two folk she'd never met, is heartwarming! A superb time we shared with her, seeing many things we would have missed otherwise! I had been before but still, Audrey made the trip so different! She wouldn't have even a cheesecake bought for her & is a superb ambassador for BAG!

“Priceless!”
Reviewed 25 December 2011

We were blown away by this amazing free service. We were met at our flat and escorted all over the upper West side. Our guide, Daniel was a font of information about the area and we learned so much. We felt like real New Yorkers as we popped into local places that tourists would never know about. Money could never buy a service like this. In fact it is priceless. I can highly recommend it. If we ever visit a city again, that has a greeter service, we will be sure to use it.
