Owner description: A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without a visit to the New-York Historical Society with its four centuries of history and art - plus the only Children's History Museum in the area. It hits the spot for anyone craving an offbeat (and often surprising) bite of the city's culture easily digested in an hour or two. Quirky, smart, immersive and across the street from beautiful Central Park, it offers a rich taste of the city. You know the city - now hear the stories. Witness New York's rise from remote outpost to city at the center of the world in our 18-minute panoramic film experience, New York Story, in surround-sound on a 75-foot screen. Then travel through time in visionary exhibitions and an entire floor of children's galleries that show why this city has always captivated hearts and minds. "We were absolutely blown away by the film which manages to convey more about New York and its history than one could imagine ever being crammed into 18 minutes." - CL, New York NY History will break free from the textbooks and jump into your life! Hungry for more? The New-York Historical Society is your neighborhood destination for food and drink, whether you're grabbing a breakfast bite and a delicious cup of coffee at Parliament Coffee & Espresso Bar, or you're looking to relax with a delectable lunch and dinner and a glass of wine at Storico. I recently went to the NYHS and enjoyed the Eloise exhibit as well as the Tiffany lamp exhibit. The gift shop is lovely with some unique choices offered.

Pros: Tiffany Lamp and Eloise exhibits are wonderful! Very well maintained, interactive stations (iPads) throughout, giving you text and video clips on the exhibits. Wasn't super busy when I visited on a Friday around 11:30AM. They have a restaurant and coffee shop onsite - I didn't eat there but they were both busy.

Cons: A little pricy at $21/person, a couple of the exhibits were closed because they were being switched out.

I really like this museum and feel like it gets lost amongst the vast amounts of other attractions. There is something for everyone with exhibits ranging from WW1 to the popular children's book Eloise. Hope you had this one to your to do list!

This museum is included in the City Sightseeing ticket and we went here on a rainy day. The museum is OK. I really liked the movie about how New York became the big city it is today. Also the lamps from Tiffany was nice. Worth a short visit, but you do not need many hours here.

We ventured into this museum due to an episode we saw on Mysteries At The Museum. That particular episode talked about how one of New York's past governors from 1702-1708 used to like to cross-dress and he had a picture painted of himself in drag placed above his mantle, which now hangs in the museum. His name was Edward Hyde, Lord of Cornbury, who was arguably the most powerful man in all the British colonies of the New World. He was also cousin of Queen Anne. "He has been accused of everything from bigotry to raiding the public treasury. But his infamous reputation is the charge that he dressed ''publicly in woman's clothes Every day.''

Also during the time of our visit, they were hosting a Tiffany Lamp Exhibit on the Fourth Floor, which SHOULD NOT BE MISSED! There are so many beautiful lamps that take up two floors. They even have an area in that display where you can design your own Tiffany Lamp. My kids loved that!

For children, they had the Eloise Exhibit, which was well done. Lots of interesting sketches and stories and things to do.

The other floors held wonderful exhibits about the New York Fire Department, 911 artifacts, subway artifacts, and so much more that you'll have to see for yourself. There was also walls lined with wonderful John F. Kennedy photos.

I would definitely RECOMMEND at stop in this museum. Give yourself 3-4 hours to truly see it all. The coffee shop has delicious items as well, so check that out too!
