“Great Staycation!”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

My friend and I stayed here for a night even though we both live in NJ just so we could experience dinner and the nightlife without having to worry about getting back to NJ. The staff was excellent, friendly, and efficient. Our room had a king size bed, a seating area, and a sufficient bathroom area - it was a nice size (and yes, the shower was see through), especially for NY standards. We had a drink in the Tower, which was lovely, and a nice brunch in the restaurant the next morning. It was within walking distance to a lot of nice shops and restaurants/bars, although it was a bit of a walk to public transportation options. WIFI was slow, but worked, and I was able to check-in a few hours earlier than check-in time, which was a nice bonus. I would definitely stay here again for another staycation!

Room Tip: The cost of some of the rooms isn't necessarily dependent on size as much as what view you want.

Upon checking in, the staff was very friendly. When I was brought to my room on the 10th floor, I found a clean modern, well-decorated room with a view of the Empire State Building and a park (I forget the name of the park). Everything was perfect during my 4-day stay at this hotel.

The only downside I can think of is that it was difficult to find a seat in the lounge on the top floor, which had the most amazing views, because most of the seats/tables were reserved and seemed to be full of people who were not staying in the hotel. One night in particular, hotel guests were not allowed into the lounge as it was being used for a private party.

Paying nearly 500 $ a night, one would expect value for money. And the standard offers value in some areas: the area is the place-to-be, the views of Hudson River, the statue of liberty, the skyline and the high-line are beautiful. Now the downsights which we experienced during our 3-night stay. Check-in time 3 p.m. - quite late in the day anyway. When we arrived at 3.10 to check in, we were told that there are some problems with our room on 15th floor (we had booked one on the upper floors) to be ready as the hotel was fully booked last night. We were asked to wait half an hour and were offered a drink at the bar. Nice, but not what we wanted. After 40 minutes, we were told that the room had technical issues and that we might get another one, unfortunately only on 7th floor. To make a long story short- at 5 p.m., we and our luggage were finally in our room which was very small but with nice views and a comfy bed. The manager called later to apologize and offered a 30 $ breakfast voucher which he would put on the room. He did not, we are now struggling to get this settled after our return. The staff at reception is quite arrogant, you can easily feel that they are 'too cool to be really kind' and that they do not really care nor listen; the lady at the check out was not able to remember our room number and we had to tell her four times within five minutes.... another strange feature is the famous boom boom room. We understood that it is a super important VIP place and on our first night, it was entirely closed due to an HBO party. But the way the staff communicates with their paying guests is quite hilarious -'do not try to get up to 18th floor today, it is private, do not pretend to get up there, bla bla..." sounds like the Secret Service protecting the President of the United States!! It's just a BAR, for god's sake! We went up one night when it was open for 'normal' people and yes, the place is great and the views amazing, but two drinks cost you 44$ and it's a show-off place, an interesting experience, but no food for soul. Would we come back to this hotel? Maybe not. It's hot outside, but inner values like genuine friendliness and true service attitude make the real 'i want to come back to this place' experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience. First off thanks for trying us out! I’m happy you enjoyed the views, rooms, neighborhood and amenities we offer, and sorry to hear about your issue at check-in. You visited us during a busy time of year which, while that adds to the great vibe at all areas of the property, it does mean there we are often at or close to sell-out We offer a 3pm check-in and almost always have our rooms ready for guests by this time. In the event of a sold-out night however every room is made available only when the guest(s) from the previous night check-out, and so I apologize for any delays in this process.

I am also taking a look into the confusion you mention with breakfast and sorry this affected your view of our staff. I will check in to see why our team came off as anything but helpful with the process. Your feedback helps us greatly in addressing perceptions!

I’m glad you were able to experience The Top of The Standard! Amazing views and cocktails. No Secret Service on our end though, I promise.

Hope to have you back soon.

Good location, nice looking hotel.

General attitude from staff that it's a good enough hotel that service isn't as important as I believe it is, which was disappointing; efforts felt quite superficial and forced.

Wifi was down for a couple of days throughout the hotel, that wasn't just quickly fixed, but the problem lingered - again, feels symptomatic of thinking that the details don't matter so much.

Thanks for your comments, and I hope we have the chance to welcome you back with us very soon! I’m sorry to hear you don’t think we find importance in the details, as these are part of what I feel set us apart from any other spot in New York. From our unique design elements to the knowledge and helpfulness of our staff I hope we have a second chance to show you the type of service we wish to offer each guest, and the type we should have conveyed on your first stay.

I am sorry to hear that you were with us recently when we had an issue with our internet connection. Once alerted of the problem we were on the phone immediately with our provider to see how they could fix this as soon as possible, and our Director of IT was a true superstar in getting this issue resolved as quickly as possible. We regret the inconvenience to our guests! Again I hope we have the chance to welcome you back soon and please let me know how I can be of any help in arranging this.

Regards,

We have also enjoy the restaurant & breakfast..very cool ambiance, good service and nice food.
The top floor bar is very nice design with spectacular backgroud view on Manhattan ..we had a drink at sunset and the armosphere was really perfect.
