I'd seen the great reviews and completely agree. The tour is expensive but very good and worth the money. I did the China town and financial district day with Johanne. The pace of the day was very good, with lots of cycling but also lots of stopping when Johanne would give very informative and comical commentary. Lunch at a great Chinese restaurant was a good surprise (not included in price) and easily worked off. I'd def recommend 'Bike the Big Apple' and I'd do it again if I got the chance.
Coming from Australia and New Zealand where Halloween isn't really a big deal i deliberately planned my trip to New York to coincide with Halloween so i could see how they do it over there. I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed as the Americans REALLY know how to celebrate Halloween!
For Halloween evening i booked my niece and i on a bicycle tour with Bike the Big Apple - they had really good reviews on Trip Advisor and their FAQ page is funny so i was sold. The tour started in the East Village at 6pm on Halloween evening and we got back to the bike shop after midnight.
It was a really special experience to bike all over Manhattan and i was impressed at how much ground we covered from Times Square all the way to Brooklyn Bridge and pretty much all suburbs in between! Highlights were biking through Times Square (that's just plain crazy!), stopping at Zucotti Park to check out the protestors, the Halloween Parade and our 'off the schedule' visit to the Chelsea Hotel before it shut for renovations. Also felt very safe with our guide Jesse at the front leading us and then our backup guy at the end (Derek?) making sure we got through intersections safely.
I got the Halloween adventure i was after and have been telling lots of people about it ever since and recommending Bike the Big Apple to anyone looking for a fun cycling experience in NYC.
We took the 'Deep in the Heart of Brooklyn' tour with Johannes.
Four years earlier we had taken the Sunday Twilight tour with them - loved it so much, couldn't wait to return to take this tour in Brooklyn.
Johannes is so knowledgeable - and we loved cycling through the different neighborhoods in Brooklyn and down to Coney Island. Of our 5 days in NY, this was the highlight. Already can't wait to return to take another tour with them.
Thank you, Johannes for a fabulous tour of Brooklyn.
I was on my own during the day in Manhatten and am thrilled that I discovered Bike the Big Apple.
I was with a group of 7 others from Holland, Spain, the USA and me from Canada, so very interesting to meet other travellers and travel by bike through the streets of Manhatten. It was fun and informative and entertaining, a beautiful sunny fall day, and we got a little exercise too.
I am 65 years young and the bike tour lasted all day, 10 to 4. It was not strenuous as we stopped frequently to learn about the areas we visited.
I will definately do this again when I visit NYas there is so much more to see and would highly recommend it to anyone with a little sense of adventure.
We had a fantastic tour of Harlem with Johannes last weekend. Not only was he a very entertaining guide, he also knew lots of quirky facts about this great city and had a very relaxed and friendly demeanour. There was a wide age span in the group but it felt like a very cohesive group and we'd definitely do another tour with this company. Make sure you have a light breakfast as you want to get fully involved in the delicious soul food on offer!
One of the things my son said he wanted to do during our 4-day trip to New York was bike across the Brooklyn Bridge. Having gone on bike trips in various cities around the world, I decided to check with several bike tour companies. BiketheBigApple had exactly the right tour (their D tour, Secret Streets), and on the perfect day for us. It seemed somewhat long at first (from 10:15 to 5 PM) but it turned out a wonderful day out. A total trip of some 30 kms with many stops proved just great to see a whole lot of NY without really getting tired. Try walking the distance! Biking is perfect.
Traffic in New York City doesn't move an awful lot so it is quite safe, compared to our hometown reference Amsterdam. The title Secret Streets doesn't make a lot of sense, but the tour does. Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, the Financial Center, Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn, DUMBO, back over Manhattan Bridge to Chinatown, Little Italy, Nolita... We saw a great deal of the city in the great atmosphere of a small group. Just perfect.
Our tour guide Max did an excellent job, was very knowledgeable and above all, a real New Yorker. Good fun, good value and not to forget: one of the highlights of the day was lunch in Chinatown, amidst ONLY Chinese people. Not exactly sure what we had, but it was truly excellent. And cost only $6 per person.
