Description: For the past 17 years, BBQ lovers across San Diego County have turned to restaurateur Phil Pace to satisfy a singular craving: mesquite-grilled baby back ribs, beef ribs, chicken and sandwiches. Serving thousands of customers a day from a diverse clientele of skateboarders to Bentleys, Phil has built his foundation on consistency, quality, freshness, and friendly service. "We thrive on providing each guest with the 'Phil's Experience', which basically comes down to organized chaos," laughs owner Phil Pace. "The biggest reason behind our success is our loyal customers who have supported us and waited in line for a taste of BBQ for the past fifteen years. "Since opening its doors in San Diego in 1998, Phil's BBQ has served over one million pounds of BBQ sauce (enough to fill Shamu's tank).

“A San Diego Favorite and there's a reason why!”

If you like the tangy, tomato-y type of BBQ, you'll love Phil's. The sauce is delicious. It's a bit out of the way from the typical tourist haunts so you'll need a vehicle to get there. Don't let the line out the door dissuade you...it goes quickly. A nice tip is that you can also go into the bar if you're "of age", order a beer and then order your BBQ and they'll bring it to you. My favorite it the Rib Tickler...comes with a few ribs, a mountain of french fries, cole slaw and a giant onion ring!

“Phil's BBQ is worth the trip.”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

Loved Phil's, especially the jovial hostess. Went early for lunch and had no problem waiting for another couple to join us. Food is delicious, quick service, great prices. We stayed over an hour just talking and enjoying our food. Got to try it.

For some reason, Phil's has received great reviews. There are long lines for average BBQ. The bar is very good.

“Not sure what the hype is about”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

Having lived in Memphis may disqualify me to rate this establishment.  I heard it was wonderful and the smells were inviting.  The place was packed and the lines went fast, promising signs!  The ribs were dry and the rest was bland to mediocre. The BBQ sauce was thick and gooey.  Where i com from the sauce is thin and bold, a great balance between meat and sauce.  The meat could not speak for itself thru all the sauce at this place.  For people who have never had Memphis BBQ, or any southern BBQ, you may find this place better than average.  I was deflated.

“Delicious, large portion sizes for a reasonable price”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

Everything at this restaurant is delicious and is given in generous helpings! Their menu is online so you can choose what you want to order ahead of time. I'm not usually a huge fan of BBQ, but I make an exception for Phil's. If you want to eat at the restaurant, you will have to wait in line; it usually winds at least half-way around the building at this location. I've heard that the line isn't quite as long at the other "Phil's" locations. If you don't want to wait in line, you can phone in your order and then walk right in and pick it up fresh. However, if you do this, you cannot eat it in the restaurant; it must be taken out. Their barbecue sauce is delicious and not overly tangy or spicy...just right. It's SO good!
