This place looked to be a highlight of of our weekend, but really fell short. We love the idea behind the place, the approach, the look, the ambiance, the menu, all looked fabulous. Some of the food was ok, and the wine list is impressive, but some of the food fell very flat.

We began with oysters which were very good, with a nice selection, and well presented. But then the service was so unengaged. The guy who delivered our oysters, who was not our waiter, placed the platter down, rapidly breezed off the names of the oysters with a vague swirl of his hand, and then wheeled away to leave. Part of the fun of having an array of different oysters is to compare, and knowing what you're comparing is kind of basic to that! We had to bring him back, slow him down. They were delicious, and varied. Great start.

Then we had some apps (salmon tartare was lovely, the PEI mussel toast was not). But then things really slid. The real sin was my halibut. When done right, halibut is a real treat. This was plainly and simply completely over-cooked - not just a little, a lot. It was tough. And then, having eaten less than half of it, no one bothered to ask me why I had only eaten so little of it.

So, to break down my "poor" rating, most of it was good or average, but destroying the halibut certainly merits a "poor".

And so, a complete disaster? No, but coming in at close to 200$ (includes tip), that's not impressive. We had two other seafood meals on our Boston weekend. Both were less expensive than this, and both were clearly better.

If you like fresh seafood and a really vibrant atmosphere, this is the place. Casual may be how you dress: this ain't white tablecloth fine-dining. But wait staff are superb, attentive and professional. We came for lunch and promptly decided to return for dinner later in our trip. The selection of raw oysters may be the best on the eastern seaboard. My mussel toast was really innovative food: mussels, draped in "melted" leeks with a delicate sauce, that tasted faintly of absinthe (?). Going to work at recreating this dish at home.
Grapefruit sorbet was grand. There was an odd pause at Sunday night dinner ( we joked that some staff must have been so exhausted from frantically busy Saturday that they went home half way through service-seemed an odd time for shift change.) But we didn't let this spoil an otherwise super dining experience!

Picture a Big Hollywood production in a Nightclub or Restaurant, add incredibly fresh and sizeable shellfish and you are in the Island Creek Oyster Bar....Set in a trendy youthful area in downtown Boston, it is for those who really love oysters, shrimp and fresh caught fish...A large bar makes any drink you desire a reality and on a Saturday night it can be very crowded....If any negatives, it is somewhat loud and somewhat pricey but you only live once!!!

I cannot say enough about how great our dinner was at the Island Creek Oyster Bar in Boston! We started with the crispy oyster sliders and they were out of this world. My husband also had the clam chowder which he loved. Our server told us the lobster roe noodles is one of their signature dishes and it was AMAZING. We are not from Boston but I would fly back here in a heartbeat just to go back to this restaurant.
