The State House is near the beginning of the Freedom Trail walk and across the street from Boston Common. The oldest portion is the facade and front part but as you go deeper into the building it has newer added on portions. The golden dome is marvelous and can be seen from a distance. We also took the free tour through the building and were led by an educated and experienced woman who really knew her stuff. Statues, paintings, and various rooms were pointed out and the government of the state was explained along with many historical comments. The tour took over an hour and was definitely worth the time. If you have any interest in history or government don't fail to take this very worth while tour.

We started our Freedom Trail walk (self guided) by going into the Massachusetts State House today. Entrance was free and we went on a free tour led by a young volunteer. The building was beautiful and it was quite interesting to hear the stories about the various governors and statesmen and women who have presided there. There are many great pieces of art, sculpture, and architecture to be seen. I must say that without the guided tour, the experience would have been boring as one would have no idea what he / she was looking at. You do need to go through a quick airport style screening and then take the elevator to the second floor where the tour starts. The tour lasted about 40 minutes.
