Description: Located in Downtown Asheville, Red Ginger is an authentic Chinese dimsum and tapas bar from the esteemed Chef Tai Tsi Lam and Hao Jiang. Red Ginger's constant goal is to deliver traditional, healthful, and elegant Chinese-style tapas and dim sum to our vibrant mountain community, providing customers with the most authentic and fulfilling dining experience possible. In contrast to the more traditional dim sum experience, wherein guests choose dishes from a rolling cart, Red Ginger embraces a dynamic and interactive dining experience: our open kitchen allows you to truly become a part of the experience that is dim sum, giving you an inside look into the artistry of our seasoned chefs. All dishes consist solely of freshly prepared ingredients, transported directly from local farms straight to your table! On the main drag of downtown Asheville, this is a super great spot and it is popular so better make a reservation for dinner. It is a contemporary, Asian styled eatery with modern decor and high quality, limited menu Asian foods. There are a few dozen dim sum plates, some appetizers, and plenty of seafood and sushi dishes as well. There is a happy buzz and wonderful cocktails, beer and wine with fast wait service staff who are pleasant and happy. This is a real treat to find such excellent dim sum in an Appalachian town. Must do if you are there. Prices are NOT like the traditional, older Chinese 'dive' or buffet line - this is upscale wonderful Asian with a vibe.

First of all we live a few months a year in Vancouver, BC, home of the best Chinese food outside of China. So we know good Chinese, especially Dim Sum.
We were delighted when Red Ginger opened two years ago. The owner is from Shanghai and owns several Asian restaurants in the area all well regarded. Their menu is loaded with traditional Dim Sum such as dumplings, pot stickers, BBQ pork buns, etc. They also offer traditional Asian options such as lo mein, fried rice, sushi, soups...or choose from slightly larger plates of crispy fried lobster, grilled salmon, smoked duck breast. Don't worry if you're a vegetarian- plenty of offerings.
We love this place so much that when my husband was released from the hospital recently we ordered take out - really! We picked it up on the way home and life was good again....

We went with another couple, allowing us to share dishes all around. Our server, Marianne, was top-notch, and her recommendations, together with research I'd done online, made for a rewarding experience. The best dishes, in order, were: Sauteed String Beans (5 stars, a real winner! $8); Gua Bao (5 stars, Chinese pancake sandwiches with pork belly, cucumber, scallions, cilantro, and plum sauce, $10); Spicy Salt and Pepper Prawns ($12; 4 1/2 stars); and Chrystal Shrimp Dumplings (4 stars, $8). We were less impressed with Pork Dumplings Shanghai Style (3 stars), Mushroom Dumplings (3 stars), and the Black Truffle Shu Mai (1-2 stars-too dense). One in our party had the Hot and Sour Soup ($3) which he loved. I had a local beer ($4?) and the other three shared a bottle of chilled Sake ($11). Our total, before tip, was $80.25, incredibly reasonable for a fun night out. We plan to return for sure. The place is well designed, bright, with an open kitchen. Good vibe.

A great way to try many items oh their extensive menu. Enough for the 3 of us to try a little of each plate. The owner recognized us from her restaurant, Umi, in Hendersonville, NC. She recommended dishes for us to try. Yum! Can't wait to go back with friends who never have been there.

Always appreciate finding a restaurant that offers a variety of selections that will meet the needs of my vegetarian family members. Red Ginger offers a great menu of small plate choices. We ordered 5 vegetarian items in addition to grilled salmon, Gua Bao, and Salt & Pepper Prawn. My favorites were the salmon and the curry puff, altho the Buddha Bean Curd roll was a yummy surprise. The service was good, but the plates came almost together, so I felt a rush to eat before things got cold. Other than wishing for a better paced delivery, we enjoyed ourselves. We were fortunate to find a nearby parking spot. Parking in downtown Asheville can be a challenge, so if you have a reservation, allow time to find a parking place.
