“Amazing atmosphere, so-so wine list”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2012

Let me preface by saying this is one of the cooler spots ANYWHERE to have a glass of wine or a coffee.

Atmosphere - A truly sexy, cozy, quiet, peaceful, dreamy place, where you can wander the path of books and find one of MANY cozy little corners to sit alone or with a companion. The way the shelves are planned, you can be 5 feet away from another person and never know he is there, due to the twists and turns that create lovely alcoves with perfect lighting. A treat to explore.

It's the kind of place perfect for a date, a chat with a girlfriend, or an afternoon alone.

Service - delightful. Professional, peaceful, quiet, attentive, and a perfect compliment to the atmosphere.

Food - I didn't try it, but the menu has some small nibbles only. Prices seemed quite high for what was offered.

Wine list - Eh, not impressed. If you are going to put "Champagne" in your name, you should have more ... champagne. I think there was only 2 maybe 3 by the glass. Bottle offerings were not extensive, maybe 6 or 7 total? There were a number of sparkling wines offered by the glass and bottle, but I sort of felt like there was not much in between the $ 15ish/glass champagne and low-end prosecco or cava. There are a number of French sparklings as well as CA sparklings out there that would have fit nicely in this middle niche, and was surprised at the absence. I opted for the Perdrier Rose sparkling - one of the 2 middle-of-the-road offerings - which was wonderful.

Besides sparkling, wine list was WAH-WAH-WAH. Really uninspired I thought. There are a few non-Burgundy and non-Bordeaux French, and some non-Chianti Italians, but for the most part really boring and not very large, again, considering this is a wine bar.

Glassware: Should be noted that glassware is EXQUISITE. Very nice touch.

If you are not a wine snob (I clearly am), and you are looking to just have a glass of something and feel smarter by atmospheric osmosis, this is the spot.

“GREAT first stop and return place to have as 'home' base - books and booze”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2011

If you're an 'older' adult and want a decent enough 'home base' when in Asheville, this may just be your new place. It's a lovely civil enviornment (except for one waitress who every time was encountered seems to have a soured disposition!). People young and not as young, all walks of life, enjoying books and browsing, reading groups, sitting in tucked-away corners, meeting before theatre, having a light snack, enjoying an after-work drink .... they were all here.

VERY decent wine list. Good enough bar-menu of accompaniment for food.

GREAT selection of books.

Nioce little bar area to sit at, OR you can select any of the numerous little corners in which to tuck away.

One down-side ... the moldy/musty smell of old books! It permiated the place AND upon returning to hotel noted the odour stayed in the clothes (had been in the place for a few hours).

Pets are allowed in and it's fun to see all the different ones who bring along their 'people' :)

Depending on the type and time of day they have a few tables/chairs for outside enjoyment to watch the world stroll on by

Would absolutely recommend!

“Wine & Books!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2011

What could be better than to enjoy an afternoon of book browsing and a great glass of wine. This is a unique place - with an amazing selection of wine and a large selection of used books. You can roam throughout the maze of books finding little sitting nooks all over the store. This is a great place to relax after a long day of shopping. A must visit while in Asheville.

“An amazing find!”

I just stumbled upon this place. It was amazing! It's so big that it's almost like a book museum. The service is wonderful, and the wine is delish. Wine and books......a perfect combination!
