“Challenging Trail”

Fun and challenging trail. You are driving right near the edge of cliff during part of the trail. Other areas you are climbing large loose rocks and then cruising thru the sandy desert.

The view through the arch half way up shows the Moab Rim parking lot far below. This trail combines slick rock, some sand (best to ride right after a big thunderstorm if you can), a little easy gravel road, and some great technical mountain biking. You share the trail with keeps, which is a big plus - fun to watch along the way.

At the top you will have the option to bail out and do the Portal Trail down. That's interesting to do for sure, but look what you're giving up! The ride back down Poison Spider is one of the best, starting right from the top. It doesn't take much longer and is so much fun! This ride is one of the classics in Moab IMO. I'd recommend just hiking up and down the Portal Trail a different time. I've ridden it half a dozen times - now always take Poison Spider back down with a great big smile on my face.

As with most of the best trails in the Moab area, you'll find a couple of scary places on this trail, and some places where proper wheel placement will be key as you climb some rocky spots. Use a spotter if you can, and pay attention to his/her instructions. I've done this trail in a bone stock Toyota FJ-Cruiser, so you don't absolutely have to have a modified rig to do this trail. If you continue on to the full Gold Bar Rim exit, you'll likely need a stouter rig, and plan for a good long day of it. But if you're just doing Poison Spider in and back out, you can do it in half a day with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the various views.

Beautiful scenery along the Colorado River. This hike is enjoyable and sports great photo opportunities. There are petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks to be seen off of this trail.
