“Good value for San Francisco, Good location for business”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

I stayed at this hotel for five nights at the end of February. Three nights were for a business meeting, but I took my wife with me and we stayed on for two additional nights. The location is great if you are doing business in or around the Financial District. If you're a tourist, the Ferry Building is steps away and there's a cable car turnaround and streetcar/bus stop right outside the hotel. The Embarcadero BART station is across the street and cabs were aplenty all hours right out front. There are several sandwich shops and cafes very close and there's a Walgreens across the street where we stocked up on snacks and bottled water. (One tip - Walgreens' photo counter sells 3-day Muni passes for $21 that allow you unlimited rides on cable cars, streetcars and buses. A one way ride on a cable car is $6, streetcar or bus is $2. Taxis can be much more. Believe me, it pays for itself in a hurry if you'll be moving about the city!)

The hotel itself seemed a bit tired. The lobby was attractive due to its open air feel and the height of the building looking up. Even the elevators look neat going up and down. Our room was adequate and comfortable, although the bathroom looked a bit dated. It was like stepping back in time - to 1985. A modest facelift would make a huge difference here.

We ate one night at the restaurant in the lobby due to having walked literally all day sightseeing. The food was good and reasonably priced, but nothing special. We didn't realize there were a lot of restaurants in the adjacent Embarcadero Center (facing the hotel's front door, look left and there's a covered alley with numerous shops and restaurants). Had we known prior to our last day, we would've walked there the night we were exhausted since it was so close and had some variety. My wife ordered room service one night when I was at a business dinner. She was content with it, although it was pricey.

We relied on the Concierge numerous times and found them to be generally helpful and friendly. I wish they'd told us about Muni passes sooner and recommended the restaurant "alley" that we were unaware of. Those were missed opportunities. Otherwise, they provided good maps, directions and advice. The front desk and housekeeping staff were universally pleasant and helpful. We received a free Wall Street Journal outside the door each morning. We didn't use the fitness center, but it seemed to be nice and open late.

We rented a car at the Budget office in the hotel and drove to Napa one day. The car came to valet and we dropped it off there too - the height of convenience. They close the rental car desk at 5pm, so to drop off with valet overnight is a $15 surcharge. If you drive yourself, it's nearly $60/night to valet park, but that's true virtually anywhere in the city.

Bottom line, this hotel is a good value in a decent location. We were able to springboard to all the tourist sites and I was close to work, so it was a great compromise. Our rate was a good deal less than other hotels, such as those in Union Square. In exchange, you get a room that could use a bit of remodeling and you can't walk to much touristy unless you're up for a hike - often a steep hike! I would not be reluctant to stay here again for business, but if I could get a comparable rate, would prefer to stay at a property in Union Square or near Fisherman's Wharf if traveling for personal reasons.

Room Tip: High rooms offer better views

I agree with everyone else's reviews of this hotel. It is a great location so central to everything. I would definitely stay here again. My room was a balcony with bay and Embarcadero center view. It was a cool week so really didn't take advantage of it. A couple of close restaurants to check out is the Oasis grill(hole in the wall but good food) the Holding Company in the Embarcadero center and coffee in the ferry building..Blue Bottle Coffee.

Absolutely love San Francisco!

I stayed at this hotel for four nights for a conference with an extra night to see the city. The location is fantastic. Right by the ferry building. Walking distance to many neighbourhoods and right by the subway if you need it.

The lobby is beautiful. The room was a good size. The bathroom was starting to look a little dated. I could see the bay bridge if I looked to the left. Area is a little noisy due to some construction on the cable car line. There were picket lines outside for a few days of my stay.

Breakfast was included for some of my nights. It was okay. The fresh fruit was good, selection of breads, french toast/panckaes, sausage and bacon, homestyle potatoes and two types of scrambled eggs.

The internet should really be free at the rate this hotel charges. I found the wireless a bit slow. Seems like it there were a few conferences going on. There is no wifi in the meeting rooms. There is free wifi in the lobby.

The gym equipment was great. There was nothing to wipe down the equipment after use though. Too bad there isn't a swimming pool and/or sauna.

Overall the customer service was great. The concierges were very knowledgeable and helpful with booking dinner reservations and subway directions etc. The apples at the front desk are a nice touch.

I'd stay here again if it was for work but wouldn't book it on my own unless I got a good rate.

Room Tip: choose a high floor that ends in 9-14 or has a view of the bay. Less noise from the lobby.

Great location near the bay and the Embarcadero plus the SF Ferry Terminal. Cable car terminus is directly out front on Market Street. Such a vibrant area surrounding the Financial District and closeby on foot to Chinatown and other amazing neighbourhoods. I loved this hotel particularly because I recognised it from the Mel Brooks "High Anxiety" film scenes in the lobby.

This place is in a great location; its walking distance to almost anything. There's the Embarcadero within a few blocks. Right across the street is a Starbucks for your coffee, a Walgreens for stocking up on water and munchies and a Taco Bell if you get tired of room service. I was on the 11th floor overlooking the bridge. There are also great running trails as well.

The Fitness Center is top notch, clean and stocked with towels and water.

The associates here are very friendly and helpful.
