If you're visiting Hawaii for the first time, you'll probably want to do a Luau. Our family has done about 10 different Luau's on most of the islands. They are all mostly the same. They take you on a trip of Polynesia which encompasses all of the major island cultures within Polynesia. I would recommend skipping a luau and head to the PCC. The PCC does exactly everything a luau does, only a thousand times better with one caveat...no alcohol.
We did the Ambassadors tour and felt it was worth every penny. Reading other reviews, it seems that for some reason there is no wind flow going through the PCC. Which means you are going to be hot and exhausted like we were when you go. Having a tour guide made the day really simple and kept the exhaustion down. Yes, you probably don't need it if you do your research and understand how to visit each of the islands, but it was really nice to not have to plan anything and just be shown around. They made sure we saw as many shows as possible and had some time for the best activities at each nation.
Our favorite show was probably Aotearoa (New Zealand). But followed closely by Fiji. Every show was authentic, educational and entertaining. Most of them have audience participation which only made them better.
A lot of people like the Samoa show but we felt the guy (actually the guy in the main picture of the PCC in tripadvisor above) took things a bit far. He tended to make fun of Asian cultures, almost to the point of racism. He also came across as a little creepy to my wife, especially with how proud of their looks the guys were . However, most people seemed to giggle at his jokes. It just got old to us.
If you do go, do NOT skip the buffet and show. The buffet is your standard Luau food.
It's probably a 5 out of 10 as far as Luau food goes and the BIGGEST downside to the entire place is that there is no alcohol. Luaus are substantially better after several mai tais and pina coladas. But the seating, service and overall quality is good enough that it should not be skipped. The little show that goes along with dinner is more than entertaining, but not so involved that you can't talk with people at your table.
But the best part, hands down, about visiting the PCC is the evening show (Ha, Breath of Life). Any luau you go to will have a very entertaining show. No show will compare to what Ha, Breath of Life can accomplish. First of all, the seating is stadium seating so there are no bad seats at all. If you're farther back, you won't be able to see facial expressions, but it's really not necessary to enjoy the show. Having been to several Broadway, San Francisco and Las Vegas shows, I would rate the show comparable to a Las Vegas style show as far as production level goes. It's really first class and the best show in all of the Hawaiian islands. If you only do 1 thing at the PCC, it should be to see the show!
Tip - the village in front of the PCC has Dole Whips if you're a Disneyphile!
