this is an older condo resort; some units have been fully remodeled, some have not and show some wear. We are in B205, nice new king bed, fully equipped kitchen, plenty of towels. Nice balcony with views of the ocean. Very very pretty property. It's whale season, and we've seen many whales from shore, some from our balcony, but others sitting on the lawn chairs - we did bring some good binocs which proved useful.

check-in was easy. Parking is fine. Elevator works; but we usually take the stairs, as we're just one floor up. ABC convenience store is practically on the property.
A very short 2 minute walk across the main street and up just a bit is the Fish Market Maui -- with excellent fresh fish for purchase, or buy lunch, as we did, great fish sandwiches.

Tip: just leave the bedroom windows open, and the slider or at least the windows to the balcony for cool ocean breezes all day and night. little or no need to use the a/c.

washer/dryer in unit is very convenient.

The place is clean and has a good bed. It was to much of a busy place for my liking.
Had to wait an hr. for the room to be ready til 4PM. We expected rooms close together but they were in different buildings. The cleaning people were nice and let us put our food in the refrigerator while they were still cleaning. The front desk staff was pleasant. I had to ask them to contact the company (management) to at least compensate us with extra coffee for having to wait the extra time. While every one at the front desk was very nice it felt impersonal. The feeling was that the workers could not do things to accommodate guest without having to contact corporate. The studio was tired.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 3rd or 4th floor with ocean view. This way you will be able to see the Whales and Turtles.

Our stay at Papakea Resort from Jan 18 - 26, was booked through Air Canada Vacations. The resort property is lovely, beautiful gardens & sparkling pools with amazing sea views! The BBQ's were great but not on your lanai, instead, situated around the pool & cleaned daily by staff.

Unfortunately our assigned Condo K104 was disappointing!!! The unit desperately needs a thorough clean, especially with a crawling baby.

The floor was filthy, the washer was dirty with grime/sand and required cleaning prior to putting in a baby wash. It was difficult to reach into the "old dryer" which was placed above the washer. It would be fine if you are 6' tall!!!
I would recommend a new stacking unit for the condo!
The bedroom dressers had a film on the top. I am not averse to cleaning, but I'm on vacation! The supplied mop didn't have an attachment. The vacuum didn't work properly. The broom was useless!
Also there is an $89 cleaning fee which is required to be paid upon vacating the premises, thankfully this fee was waived by Aston management.

The icing on the cake was having cock roaches!!! The front desk personnel were informed immediately but said they had to get in touch with Aston as they were property managers only.
We never heard from Aston during our stay, but upon returning home there was a voice mail message from Aston! Not sure why they wouldn't have called the Condo phone rather than ringing Canada!!!

The cookware and crockery was adequate but it would have been nice to have had some decent knifes and utensils along with salad & fruit bowls.

In summary, this unit is terribly lacking in comparison to other onsite units. Air Canada should be frequently inspecting these properties as they certainly are not what is advertised. I would recommend booking privately (VRBO) and avoid Aston/Air Canada Vacations. Obviously the private rentals are more interested in their clients having a wonderful vacation!

Room Tip: Avoid K104 at all cost!

The condo was absolutely stunning and had everything I needed.

TIP:
This property lists as "an ocean front property."

If you want an oceanfront unit (where you can view the ocean from your balcony) don't reserve "ocean view." My ocean view unit was a view of a lawn and other condos (see photo of living room) with a bit of the ocean in the far distance. Not what I had expected for 414.00 per night. I thought I was paying for ocean front!!!!!!!!

If you do not prefer ground floor, specify as well.

January 18 - 25, 2017 we stayed in unit K406 of the Papakea Resort ... aka Aston Papakea Resort if the owner of the particular condo rents under the Aston umbrella. Other units are rented via VRBO, or a different company.

We booked through Air Canada vacations.

Our unit had a loft with 2 twin beds and a full ensuite. The twin beds could be pushed together. We had a beautiful view of ocean and overlooking the pool, and centre garden area which had a large 6 or 8 hold putting green.

There is no beach. The resort is on the water, but ocean view only. Daily we would see people going for early morning walks which eventually takes you along a boardwalk that follows a beach in front of the Westin hotel resort (which is huge!!!). It's a lovely walk, you can walk for miles all the way to Whaler's Village (excellent shopping area & 2 waterfront restaurants).

We booked through Air Canada, arriving on a Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. Security met us and gave us the key card to our unit and all pertinent information. The next morning we had to go to the desk and register formally.

Thursday evening the resort throws a Meet'n Greet Mai Tai gathering at the poolside cabana. We met some of the owners and had a great time. Mai Tai's were unlimited if you like them.

Pool was a pleasant temperature, not cold, and hot tub was great. Each morning, including weekends, attendants were at then pool cleaning and testing the water for chemical balance, adding what was needed. There were 6 excellent BBQ's for everyone's use.

The unit was clean and comfortable. It was fully loaded with dishes for 12, cutlery, glasses, coffee mugs, etc. Coffee for a couple of days was supplied, plus a few sugars and cream packets. We brought our own sugar. We had to buy salt & pepper.

A good rib eye or sirloin tip steak was cheaper at the grocery store across the road than home (Alberta ... known for its beef). Lots of stores across the road ... people would go to the coffee shop for their morning coffee.

The weather in Kaanapali is windy, cooler, and rains more compared to Kihei. One day we left Kaanapali because we had enough of the wind, and thought we'd just go for a drive. It was super windy, raining off and on, and 78F. We drove to Kamoale Beach II in Kihei. To our surprise there wasn't a cloud in the sky, temperature was 86F and there was just a nice light breeze. We spent 2 or 3 hrs on the beach. The only day suitable for sitting around the pool at our resort was the last day we were there ... Wednesday, Jan. 25. Our flight did not leave until 11:00 p.m. Air Canada Vacations tell you they try to accommodate people for late checkouts, but the longest we could keep our room was noon. Since the weather was nice, we enjoyed hanging out around the pool. Other days, we saw people at the pool when it was cold and raining off and on and we thought they must be die hards, or why would they stay around the pool? Now we know ... they were probably Canadians like us with a late flight.

We spent one evening at Lahaina shopping on Front Street ... it was a nice way to pass the time. The unit has TV, but we never used it. The last morning I turned it on and found the batteries in one of the controls was dead ... oh well.

There was one boogie board in the closet, I'm assuming if it is not locked up then it is for tenants use. Parking can really be tight, especially the parking spaces facing the buildings. They were really narrow.

Drove to 7 Sacred Pools, past Hana. The road to Hana is fine. It is paved 2 lanes all the way with yellow lines for most of it. It is the road to the pools that becomes harrowing ... 1.5 vehicles wide, no lines ... I met up with 3 vehicles and had to pull over where I could find a spot ... had to back up a ways once. But it was worth it. If you go, get there by noon at the latest ... it is a 3 hr drive. All the tour buses (6+) arrive around noon, and they all hike up the 2 miles to the falls. It isn't busy when going earlier. We didn't really stop in Hana.

We also hiked the Halakeala Crater. Also harrowing drive up ... but worth it. Hiked about 3 miles into crater. Views are spectacular. Get there early too, 11 a.m. or earlier, because the clouds can move in and obstruct your view.

I've always stayed in the Kihei area. This is my first time in the Kaanapali area. I have friends who absolutely love it for the stores, restaurants ... But me ... I'm going for the weather. I want to walk out of my condo to enjoy the pool or beach ... not have to drive 45 minutes from Kaanapali to Kihei to get the good weather. I'd rather drive to where I want to go shopping ... which isn't often.

We also loved going for happy hour at Beach Bum's near Buzz's Wharf off the highway to Lahaina. HH starts is from 3 - 6 p.m. Good appies too.!

If you don't care ... this resort is awesome!

Enjoy your trip to Maui whenever you go!

There is a $17 daily resort fee that is additional, and $92 fee for cleaning unit after your trip. No maid service, but they pick up the garbage a few times during the week. And you can request extra soap, shampoo, etc.
