A one-bedroom villa is the way to go at the Westin. Nicely laid out with a kitchen, luxury bathroom, living and dining rooms, bedroom and a lanai. Grounds are lush and well-maintained. Housekeeping is understaffed. If you don't request a cleaning time your room may not be made up until 4pm. Ask to be placed on the second floor or above to have a chance to see the ocean. Kitchen needs a little help. Utensils are worn. There is no oven in the room. Microwave is placed so high that if you are shorter than 5'8" you cannot see into micro. Staff is outstanding and helpful. Although the shop has delicious take-out food, it is too small for a property this size. It should offer clothing and other fun amenities. Never had a bad meal at Nanea or the pool bar. The common area is delightful. You can sit in the air-conditioned room, look out over the ocean and relax.

Room Tip: Try to get a room other than on the ground floor.

We stayed in a one bedroom villa in Building 6 in May 2016. I recommend this building because it is quiet, a short walk to the west parking lot, and (depending on where your villa is in the building) you have a view of the ocean and golf course. The one bedroom villa has a full kitchen (equipped with pots, pans, silverware, plates, etc.), washer/dryer, dining area, bedroom with king bed, and living room with pullout couch. The hotel provides you with one complimentary kit of dishwashing liquid, a small box of laundry detergent, and two sheets of fabric softener. We found having the washer/dryer in our villa extremely helpful during our stay. The bathroom was large with a separate shower and a jet tub. The view from our dining table was of the golf course. We had a partial view of the ocean from our lanai. Looking out of the windows onto the immaculate golf course with the mountain in the background was a lovely way to start each day! If you have stayed at the Westin Maui villa resort, the one bedroom villa at this Kauai property is similar in setup but a bit smaller in scale.

The on-site restaurant - Nanea - serves a good breakfast buffet and prime rib dinner. Watch out for the aggressive birds on the patio! I had the seafood pasta one night but can't recommend it as it was really heavy on the olive oil. You get a breakfast buffet voucher for one person if you forego housekeeping that day. Otherwise the breakfast buffet costs about $26 pp. There is an onsite market that sells pizzas, sandwiches, meats to barbecue, Starbucks coffee, ice cream, and sundries.

Be sure to get a Kauai map from the concierge and information about safe beaches and snorkel rental. I found the map from the concierge was better than the map I got from AAA and the various guides I got from the airport.

The Princeville shopping center is close by. There is a Foodland grocery store in that shopping center where we bought water and groceries. Otherwise, there is a Safeway and Foodland on the highway to Princeville from Lihue and a Walmart and K-Mart in Lihue. We went to the K-Mart in Lihue on our arrival date and later found prices at the K-Mart were lower than at the Princeville Foodland.

The only negatives we experienced were: The elevator in our building broke down on our first day so we had to carry our heavy suitcases up two flights of stairs! (Not a fun way to start our vacation.) There was an issue with our refrigerator upon our arrival, but maintenance quickly fixed the problem for us. It took a few phone calls and some effort to connect to WiFi. (Needless to say, our stay did not look promising on our arrival date. Fortunately, we didn't encounter any other problems with our room during the rest of our stay.) The water in the infinity pool was cold. (We read somewhere that the pools were heated, but the infinity pool was not heated when we were there.) My 12 year old was a bored with the shallow pools (the water slide is designed for smaller children) at this property. Except for the staff we met at Nanea, the towel shack, the check-in counter, and one security guard, the other hotel staff we encountered around the property did not bother to greet us.

On the whole, this was a good property because of the room amenities and location (if you prefer the quiet north shore), and because we were assigned a room with a great view.

Room Tip: Choose Building 6.

I wrote an earlier review of this place, but as we checked out I we learned we missed out on a good deal. I'm adding this so you will know to take advantage of it.

When we checked in they gave us a bunch of stuff, including a little packet of cards that you can trade in by the pool for clean beachtowels. In tiny print on the inside cover of the packet it said that for each day you don't use the housecleaning services, you get one free admission to the breakfast bar (worth about $20). We never used the housecleaning services but didn't get the free breakfast bar because we didn't know about it. The person was supposed to tell us on check-in but they did not. The deal is good for one person, must be used the same day, and can only be used three times during your stay.

If it is Sunday you can get one free brunch. The card also says you can get 500 Starwood points for three days. When we checked out we complained to the girl at the desk that we didn't know about this offer. We asked for 1500 Starwood points in compensation. She checked with her manager who said that they no longer offer the Starwood points, but gave us 500 (instead of 1500). I think if they no longer offer the points, they shouldn't write that on their card, and they should tell people about this offer when they check in.

Other than that, we had a very nice time.

beautiful resort property in Princeville Kauai overlooking the ocean. studios one and two bedroom condos. The views of the mountains and ocean are awesome. Although this property is not on the beach, you do get use of the beach at the St Regis resort without the expensive rates for a hotel room only. Several pools on property. Very nice hotel staff. Tina at the concierge was very helpful and nice. I also got a lomi lomi massage onsite, in the open air cabanas by Bridget. It was the best massage I ever had. Our weather was mostly cloudy during our stay but the worst day in Hawaii still beats the best day anywhere else
