Reading a few reviews I was a little apprehensive before checking in, but was delighted with everything we found at this hotel.
The room although not massive was very comfortable, everything you need and a nice bathroom with a fabulous rain shower. The bottle of wine is a nice touch and turn down was perfectly timed and was a good room refresh with lovely chocolates rather than just closing curtains and folding back the bed that other resorts offer. The public areas are nice, pool area good, although a few more umberellas would help particularly on the grass area. Red Salt was very good, tasty food, well presented and served, a more varied menu and extended bar menu would have encouraged us to eat more in the restaurant though. Breakfast was OK but possibly the weakest part of our stay, there could be several improvements to the cooked options as well as the buffet options but service was prompt and friendly.
What sets this resort above others has to be the fantastic location, although you don’t have a full beach in front of the hotel, turn left down a good pathway there’s a lovely beach or turn right (watch your step) onto the most spectacular beach.
The other thing that makes this such a good stay, the staff, from superb valet staff to friendly front desk, Red Salt and pool staff, everyone seems to have a pleasant smile, to me that means it’s as pleasant to work there as to stay.

Koa Kea Hotel & Resort is structured in a "U shape" facing the Pacific. ONLY the "Waterfront" rooms have an unobstructed view of the ocean. "Ocean View" means that you will have a narrow to broader view of the water depending on where your room is located.

We visited with a confirmed "Ocean View" reservation. The second-floor "Ocean View" room assigned to us provided a glimpse of the water ONLY if you looked well over the pool bar cabana. We objected and the staff person said that we should have reserved a "Waterfront" room for a "full water view". Of course, none were available at that time. We asked her how could have we known that fact?

We refused the first room and waited in the lobby for an hour. The staff found an "Ocean View" room with a water view from the balcony. That was better.

Given the >$500/night price tag, the hotel information should accurately share its physical shape and the associated impact on ocean views. The room and water view descriptions should be objective and credible, and be accompanied by images. I can't imagine what a "Partial Water View" provides.....

We enjoyed the pool, restaurant, and location on the island. However, for its >$500/night price, we disliked the lack of tranparency about hotel's shape, varying room views, and its "motel" feel.

Room tip: Seek waterfront rooms is you want to see the ocean

We were lucky enough to get upgraded to an ocean front room on the second floor, so it was quiet and had a beautiful view of the ocean. The room and bathroom were top notch, and I thought the room was well sound-proofed. When we shut our deck sliding doors we could barely even hear the waves. You do have a walk a short distance to get to a sand beach, but we walked along the hotel path to the public access, and it wasn't a problem. The steps to the rocky beach area right in front of the hotel have been washed away by the ocean so it's a tricky step down (my husband scraped his shin quite badly when we tried to do this at night in the dark...). The pool/hot tub were lovely. The poolside bar was great. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The in-room coffee maker made the best coffee and espresso I have ever had in a hotel room. We took a surfing lesson from the surf kiosk (Hoku Water Sports) on the hotel grounds and our instructor was GREAT (I want to say his name was Anika)- very calm and patient. It was one of the highlights of the trip. We thought the restaurant, Red Salt, was excellent. Our breakfast was included in room price and it was delicious.

My wife and I went to Koa Kea for an annual vacation. The room was extremely comfortable and welcoming. While in the room we never heard anyone in the hallway or other rooms. At night while out to dinner, staff would come in and turn down the room (mood lighting, nice music, water bottles and ice set out). We wanted full ocean view but only available was Partial Oceanview and it was fantastic. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom had a rain shower head which was cool. The breakfasts were delicious, the staff is super friendly, and having water gear available to rent on site) was super convenient (snorkels etc). They have valet only parking which was nice but got a little tedious if we were going in and out through the day. There even a little cat that hangs around and is very friendly - great perk for those missing their pets! Overall fantastic experience, would definitely recommend

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews. I was excited for a smaller, boutique-y feel and hoping for a personalized experience and an attentive staff. While there is nothing to outwardly complain about with this property, we felt that it was very expensive for a just ok hotel and overall experience. Our room was on the ground floor which meant no balcony and really no privacy. If you are booking try to avoid this. The room was also small, though nicely furnished. Same with the bathroom. It was nicely done with marble, and had nice Fresh products, but didn't feel very special. The breakfast buffet was also disappointing compared to the other 4 hotels we stayed at during our trip to Hawaii. The location was great for what we wanted to see in Kauai, and Poipu is very cute, but the beach was not easily accessed from the hotel- you had to climb over some rocks in the surf to get there. The beach is beautiful once you get there. Overall, the property is really small, which we thought we wanted, but it just felt a little cramped and crowded. The layout did not allow for any privacy, and when we were going to bed the first night we could hear children playing and adults talking right outside our room. There's really no avoiding this as the hotel is a horseshoe shape and the communal/ pool area is in the center. Our second night was more enjoyable because there seemed to be fewer people at the hotel that day. It felt like just a place to sleep and not someplace where we were excited to hang out for a long time. Thankfully we only stayed two nights.

Room tip: Call to ensure you're not on the ground floor!
