“Perfect Hideaway in lovely Hanalei, Kauai”
Reviewed 12 July 2011 for a stay in July 2011

Great location in Hanalei, the center of activity on the north shore of Kauai. Our expectations were exceeded with regards to cleanliness of the room and property, the extras provided like beach equipment, towels, outdoor shower, grill, and much more. We prefer the quiet places with character when we travel and if you prefer the same and want to be on the most beautiful north side of Kauai, then this is a perfect choice. Simon and his staff will take great care of you and treat you like friends from the moment you arrive. The location of Hanalei is truly in the middle of everything offered on the north shore of Kauai. We stayed in the Love Shack and found it perfect for our needs. A nice plus is the Love Shack has a great sound system with an IPOD deck and provided music CDs from Simon's collection so you can jam out at "home". Hanalei Surfboard House is in an ideal location for those wanting to explore the north shore of Kauai, the hands down most beautiful part of Kauai. Waimei Canyon is the only location that even comes close in beauty when looking at the south side of Kauai. However, most excursion activities, especially boat activities, leave from or occur on the southern portion of Kauai, from Kapaa and further south to Poipu and Port Allen. Although Hanalei does offer a few boat options, you need to make reservations well in advance as space is limited. If your plan is to have lots of boat excursions and even most land excursions, you will be limited staying on the north shore without a bit of a drive to the south side of Kauai. We did not want to drive too much so we chose to keep our excursions to a minimum and enjoy all the wonderful beaches, hiking, and beauty that the northshore does BEST. Your room at the Surfboard House is a very short stroll to Hanalei Bay Beach, just one of the great beaches on the northshore. You will be a very short drive to many other wonderful beaches, all with their own character and all great in different ways. Hiking the Napali coast is also a short drive away. Have a great trip to Kauai. The north shore is really the best and I can't wait to return someday.

A rave review from the 2011 Frommer's Hawaii travel guide led us to the Hanalei Surfboard House. Our experience exceeded our expectations. We were cordially greeted by owner/host Simon Potts, who gave us useful tips and information. As stated on the website, the rental is just minutes from a lovely beach on Hanalei Bay and a reasonable walking distance from the charming town of Hanalei. We stayed in the Elvis suite, which played respectful tribute to The King, particularly his Hawaii period, without being over the top. The suite was whimsically, yet tastefully, decorated with 1930s-1960s vintage antiques and Hawaii memorabilia. The kitchen was well equipped, and we were impressed with the quality of the appliances. The bed and pillows were quite comfortable, and the linens soft and good quality. High quality, regionally made shampoos and soaps were appreciated. There was a charming "lanai" with table for two and excellent grill just outside sliding doors overlooking a lovely yard. Overall, the landscaping and grounds were well done, with charming water features, many attractive plantings, and interesting lawn ornaments. My husband's initial apprehension about the space not having air conditioning was put at ease by the area's comfortable clime, an effective fan, and pleasant cross breezes. Pott's friendly cat Noodle made we cat people feel even more at home. We would return.

“Like your own beach house”
Reviewed 1 June 2011 for a stay in May 2011

I have stayed at the Hanalei Surfborad House twice so far, and will be returning again. For me one great thing about staying here is that the owner respects your privacy and leaves you to enjoy your escape, but is responsive if you do need anything attended to or have questions about the area.

The landscaping is wonderful and being Kauai, luxurious, adding to the sense of privacy and holiday. The self-catering studios are clean, functional and decorated with just the right touch of Hawaiiana. Your own little beach house! There are little oudoor spaces for you in the front and back of the studio.

The propety is right across a quite road from the beach, and a pleasant walk into town if you want a bit of exercise. The units come equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including beach gear. Pick up some Hawaiian music in Princeville to play on the CD player!

The best thing about staying here is that there are so many positive things going on to support your holiday experience, with only the noise of the refrigerator to bother you if you are a light sleeper.

“Layed back digs in a layed back town”
Reviewed 11 February 2011 for a stay in January 2011

Right across from one of the world's great beaches and a stones throw from the most scenic hike I've ever done. The fence around the property is all surfboards and the garden is decorated with bowling balls. Welcome to Simon's little slice of paradise. The outdoor garden shower, the bullfrog in the outdoor bath, the view of the mountains from the back porch...perfect. Simon has thought of everything. On the front porch upon arrival, grass mats, beach chairs, beach bag, towels, boogie boards and snorkel gear. All you have to do is walk 100 yds and your day is set. Already working on our next visit. Dan and Alex, Raleigh, NC
