You will need access to car if you stay here - but if you don't have a car you will see very little of the Island. We have loved our stay here that has everything you need. The dwelling is bigger than it looks in the photos & the bed Is very comfortable. Very peaceful location with no traffic noise. We have stayed 5 nights and wished we were staying longer as it is a great place to relax. Loved the out door shower. The visitors book at premises shows that there have been many satisfied customers. We would stay again if we return to the big island
As part of our 48th anniversary we had the wonderful experience of staying 7 nights in the 2 BR Cottage just outside Hilo owned by Laura and Aki. My wife and I could not have been better pleased.
The location in HAWAIIAN PARADISE PARK just a few blocks off Keeau/Pahoe Hwy was private, quiet, peaceful, ideally situated just completely tranquil. The home sits near the end of a dead-end road adjacent to just a few equally private estates -- only 1 within view if you struggle to see thru the trees.
The property is convenient to Hilo -- perhaps 10 to 15 minutes normal drive to the university and 2 or 3 minutes max on to an abundance of shopping, restaurants, and heavily populated areas; about 20 minutes to the airport and old Hilo/the beautiful downtown Bayfront & park. ....... Smaller roadside fruit/vegetable markets, convenience stores, and others are only minutes from the property. Downtown Hilo has a superb farmers market with ample parking and great prices ..... Note -- coconuts are the ONLY agriculture product that can be carried off the island (no, not even bananas or avocados) -- agents confiscated all else at the airport.
The property sits high and dry sufficiently away from the low lying areas of Hilo that worry about high tide, tsunami, or the common flooding associated with heavy rain downtown and along the shoreline approaching the airport. .......[ The western part of the Big Island (Kona and North Kona inland and eastward past mid-island) are essentially dry desert locations. Unlike those, The eastern 1/3 of the island is tropical rain forest -- that includes all of the Hilo Area and just about everything east just a few miles after passing the volcanoes.]
Another pleasant feature of the rainforest is a wonderful rain shower after dark practically every evening - - perfect for sleeping and the frogs/birds will sing you to sleep. We regularly slept with the windows and doors open(all screened) at night to listen to the wildlife sing and the rain falling outside. And fyi, we did not see a single mosquito and had no use for insect repellant at the cottage.
The grounds are immaculate, well landscaped, beautifully adorned with ornamentals, various fruit and nut trees, lovely fragrant flowers and shrubs, and in a tropical rainforest environment surrounded by lush & pleasant beauty of everything green. Song Birds and frogs serenade the guests, while wild boar, pheasant, and turkey can be seen/heard about the forest area, along the road serving the neighborhood, and on the many, many thousand acres of unsettled rainforest and fields that comprise Hawaiian Paradise Park.
The lanai is wonderfully designed, well appointed, and tastefully decorated. Kitchen appliances are modern with a full fridge and microwave as well as all the items needed for food preparation and serving. Cabinet space is more than adequate. A nice size propane grill is located on the covered patio for cooking out. Use of the washer & dryer at the main house is available and includes all the products needed to do the job.
Both the bedroom and the living room are quite spacious (probably 12 x 20 ft each. ... MOST IMPORTANTLY, both the bed and the sofa-sleeper were exceptionally comfortable (rare for a sofa-bed). Ample pillows, linens, and such are provided. Closet space is plentiful.
TV selection was great -- make yourself familiar with DISH remote operations in advance (as I had to call the grounds keeper, Skip, to get the how-to from him) -- Wi-Fi was fast ALWAYS FAST. The bedroom has a large selection of magazines and books featuring local tourist and sightseeing info. ... beside the basket containing that material is a basket containing cloth grocery/shopping bags (local stores do not provide plastic or paper bags but are happy to sell them if you fail to bring your own).
Kicking back (on the very large and comfortably appointed patio) with a cold beverage in the evening or enjoying the great Kona Koffee (Laura provides a courtesy bag to get you started) in the morning is a memorable way to start and finish each day.
Consistently the least expensive GASOLINE on the Hilo side of THE BIG ISLAND was at the SMITH'S SUPERMARKET gas pumps located in the nearby shopping center area (between the Cottage and the outskirts of Hilo). Also, one of the COTTAGE phone numbers can be entered at the pump for an add'l 5-cent/gal discount but I've forgotten which number you are to use -- ask Laura. ON THE KONA (Kailua-Kona) side of the island the best price for food items AND GASOLINE was by far at Costco -- only a few blocks up the hill from the downtown commercial waterfront tourist area. ... Every Food item will give you sticker shock regardless of where purchased -- fast food even worse.
A military training base with small airstrip is located along SADDLE ROAD near the turnoff (but I'm not sure it is open to anyone not stationed there) to MAUNA KEA -- another military facility that is accommodating is actually located right there at the MAUNA LOA volcano park along Observatory Road just off the Hawaii Belt/Queens Hwy -- near the village of Volcano. All are near -- 35 minutes or so (probably less) ML and 50 MK -- to the Cottage. We fully enjoyed touring all of those ..... When you drive to Mauna Kea be sure to make time to drive by the Walker Ranch and continue on down another 25/35 minutes or so to the nice, clean, lovely inland village of WAIMEA which will see you back on the HAWAII BELT and in an opportune location to travel west to WAIKUA then along the NW coast back NE along the HI-Belt toward HONOKAA then along the North Coast back to Hilo.
SKIP & SHERRY take care of the property for Laura & Aki. They are retired and reside on the opposite side of the road a few properties down from the rental. AND THEY ARE SIMPLY FANTASTIC HOSTS -- courteous, genuinely friendly, and very helpful in every regard. Skip is a Navy Veteran, so understand if he can't walk on land without wobbling and tell him this retired Marine said to give him grief until he buys the beer. WHAT WONDERFULLY GRACIOUS, AND FULLY ACCOMMODATING HOSTS THEY ARE.
SMALL GROUPS OR LARGER FAMILIES SHOULD CONSIDER THE MAIN HOUSE AS IT IS FABULOUS.
ENJOY !! And did I mention --WOW !!
YOU'VE MADE A FANTASTIC SELECTION IN THIS PROPERTY. A BARGAIN IN EVERY RESPECT. ... WE WILL CERTAINLY BE BACK. Heading to Rome now then back to our 2nd Home in WV and then our place in Las Vegas in time for the summer heat ----
WHEEHAW! WHAT A WONDERFUL STAY --- THANK YOU LAURA & AKI .... THANK YOU, SKIP & SHERY --- SALUTE TO ALL !
