“rental house hawaii”
Reviewed 12 April 2018 for a stay in April 2018

It was a nice house.spacious and comfortable especially the beds. The house needs to update and needs fixtures. Our first day,the coffeemaker is broken and was replaced after a day.the screen windows are broken, some cabinet doors were unscrewed, dishwasher leaks, and the oven door when we open it fell down,we have to placed a chair to hold it closed.
I hope next time they rent it out, they have to detailed check it and replace the things that are broken and fix the the things that need to be fix,for safety and comfort of the renters

Mahalo nui for letting us know about the maintenance issues. We fixed the cabinet doors, oven door, and washer tub right away. Remember that we're here 7 days a week to assist with any issues you may encounter :-)

“Thanksgiving disapointment”

We took the rental because of the room and the area it was in. The home is nice looking and was very clean, for the most part the grandchildren enjoyed the time of being together and because the grandson went to the University he knew the island and would take his sister around to the different areas. On Thursday (Thanksgiving day), we were getting ready to make some cinnamon rolls for the kids to have that morning. After getting the rolls ready I was ready to put them into what I thought was an oven that was supposed too be pre-heating, only to find there was no heat in the oven. I thought maybe there was something I did wrong which I felt would be unusual since I have used this type of oven maybe 60 to 100 times. We took out the instruction booklet they have there and went through every type of setting too no avail. So there we sat with a butterball turkey and all the fixing with the inability to cook most all of it. We than had to get everyone together and find a restaurant that served a turkey dinner. We went to a restaurant that the people in the area told us about. The turkey dinner they served was cold and had hardly any flavor. I know that my grandchildren and a couple of his friends were quite disappointed already, so my wife and I didn't say anything and continued with what I considered a disappointing dinner. We stayed a couple extra days to help elevate some of my grandsons disappointment. So if you may be planning to stay at this place just don't plan on any good meals. You will only be using the stove. PS this cost us for the store bought food we couldn't use and than paying for the turkey meals an extra 212.00

We are so sad to see this poor review of Mele Kai. We would like to explain the issue that happened from our perspective, in hopes that this two star review will not damage the reputation of this lovely
home or of our company.

We received a call from the White party at around noon on Thanksgiving Day. Their call was taken immediately. They shared with us that the oven was not heating up and they weren?t sure if they were setting it right or if oven was broken? We went over all the various oven cycles to see if any worked. During the troubleshooting process, we thought we had gotten the ?fast bake? setting to work. We were all relieved and hung up.

A few minutes later the guests called back to let us know the oven was still not heating. At that point we had done all we personally could, and we let the guests know we would reach out to the home?s handyman. The handyman was reached within 5 minutes, and he suggested it might be a circuit breaker. We attempted to go that route, and nothing! At that point we knew that we needed to have a specialist come out to the house to fix the oven.

Since it was Thanksgiving Day we knew this was an impossible task (it can take Sears weeks to get a service technician out to this area even when it?s not a holiday!). Of course we felt terrible and wanted the guests to be able to enjoy their meal. So we called guests right back and OFFERED THEM USE OF ANY OF OUR OTHER HOMES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD to prepare and serve their meal, free of charge. They declined, and opted to go to a restaurant instead.

They asked us to pick the restaurant and make the reservations for their thanksgiving dinner. We recommend the best restaurant in our town for them to eat. We called the restaurant and got all the info for the reservation situated. We gave the guests $170 for their meal. They seemed appreciative at the time and we thought we had made them happy.

Of course we were terribly disappointed that the oven picked Thanksgiving day to go belly up. We felt so bad for the guests and did absolutely everything in our power to try to make them happy, but it sounds like it didn?t work. One of the things people love about this place is its remoteness; that it is disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the "modern world". But of course the flipside is that some
things move at a different pace here, and sometimes one simply must ?go with the flow?.

“A Lovely Place with a nice Aloha Spirit”
Reviewed 22 October 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Mele Kai is a beautiful home with a lot of detailed architecture that we loved seeing throughout the house. Our boys are 14 & 11y.o. and it was great to have all 3 commodious bedrooms to relax in. It was also nice to have the Master Bedroom 2 floors above the kids' rooms (just nice to have space whilst on vacation). The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the lack of air circulation. We may have just arrived in an inopportune time with the weather. It was very hot and humid. Even with the ceiling fans all on high and all windows and lanai sliding doors open, it was very hot and humid the first 3 days of our vacation. It did cool down a little on days 4 -6 and sleeping was much more comfortable. But, it was hot again on our last night. It doesn't seem to be a common thing to have a/c in the homes in Hilo which is why I state it might have been due to the weather that made things a bit more uncomfortable for us.

The photos on the website is just like it looks. It's beautiful!!! The lava where the foyer is built around is gorgeous and a nice element to the design of this house. The outdoor shower downstairs was fine. The laundry room downstairs is nice to have when beach towels have been used during the day.

The great room is very spacious and comfortable. We like to cook our own meals for breakfast and sit on the lanai to enjoy our meal. There was a pot that had a broken handle and it was hard to cook with it. So, we just went out and purchased one for the house. It just made things easier. According to the Welcome folder, they ask to not leave food outside so we just put everything in the fridge (plenty of room). We do know why though, living in a tropical environment brings bugs. There were a few cockroaches, but fortunately there were also a few geckos in the house and we were happy to see them there. They got rid of the pests. They never really bothered us other than occasional surprise with Mr. or Mrs. Gecko and a cockroach here or there.

The back of the house faces the ocean. There is a path called "Beach Rd" on Google maps. It's an unpaved road and within 100 steps from the back of the house to Beach Rd. It was a beautiful site to see the ocean. Unfortunately, it's quite a popular place for locals and the people who walk early in the morning. The locals go fishing there as well around 3 - 5:30p and the road can get quite busy which means it's not as private as one would think. We were okay with it for the most part unless a car would leave late at night and the headlights would shine straight into the Master Bedroom at around midnight or sometimes later. That combined with the roosters consistently crowing at 5:30am was a bit of an annoyance. Yes, there are wild roosters everywhere. They walk across the front of the house in the mornings and it's quite cute. However, we were waking up the first 2 days @ 5:30a.m. We did get used to them and I would wake up at 6:30a after an hour of crowing. I guess a slow, ambient, and natural alarm clock. The Coqui frogs are everywhere as well, but for some reason, we all loved their sounds. They never bothered us.

The Master Bathroom is stunning and very spacious as well. A well-thought out space. My only concern were the lack of curtains on the bay windows which look right into the shower. So, at night, you can be seen. I just put up towels. I'm a bit more conservative and don't care to have others see me taking a shower.

Getting there at night can be difficult because there are no street lights and it is very dark! Use your GPS if you arrive there when it's dark. The address says 1st Ave; however, the street sign is Akala (which is also 1st). So, a few U-turns here and there before we found it. We also started remembering landmarks. For example, the 3rd power pole or the 35 mph marker. Not easy to see at night. My other suggestion is to purchase your groceries first before heading to the house. It is about 30 min. outside Downtown Hilo. It is actually very easy to navigate once you realize where the house is the first time and see it during the day. You will get your bearings quite quickly.

The wifi is spotty and not very strong. If we needed to check in with the airlines, we just used our data on our phones. However, there are plenty of Starbuck's in town.

Overall, this place was a great vacation for my family and I. We enjoyed our stay.

“Loved this home”
Reviewed 23 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

This house was wonderful! It was clean, well appointed with all the amenities you need. Your home away from home. The owners did a fantastic job decorating this home. Plenty of room to relax in the common areas and kitchen. The beds were comfortable and had no problems with the home. Juan was very helpful and it was very easy checking in and out. We will definitely stay here again when we visit Keaau.

Beautifully furnished home with all the amenities and terrific views of the ocean. Easily accommodated our family of 5 and plenty of room to host friends for dinner. This is a must rental if you want to stay near Hilo or Pahoa.
