This is good if you want to get down into the valley without a treacherous walk or drive. It is beautiful. The guide was knowledgeable about the area and particularly the plants. However, you aren't in the wagon for very long. That was the shortest part of the trip. Most of the trip is traversing the hill in an old 4 wheel drive van. I didn't feel like it was worth the price.

There are not too many ways to see Waipio Valley and the ride down was very steep (25% grade)! I would not consider hiking in, esp with kids. The owner, Bob, was a nice, local resident of the area and is very knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna. I felt good supporting a local business and it felt good getting out of the resort for awhile. He picks you up in a van to make it down the road into the valley and then you switch into an open wagon pulled by two mules. The ride is not too long, but you get to see a very beautiful and interesting place. There are wild horses wandering around and some are very friendly. Glad we went on the tour, but it is a little pricey.

While I would not consider going down into the valley a high priority for a visitor, if it is something you want to do, this is a really delightful way to do it. Compared to horseback, by jeep or in a van, the wagon tour is so much more pleasant. Bob was a knowledgeable and relaxed tour guide. His old van took us to the valley floor where he loaded us into the roofed carriage pulled by two mules. The carriage holds no more than 10 so your group will assuredly be small. We saw water falls, the vegetation and agriculture of the valley.

We were picked up on time at the Neptune Garden meeting spot. It was a muggy hot day and the van air conditioning was broken. Van smelled of stale cigarettes. Windows only opend a small crack and back 2 windows didn't open at all. It was a very unconfortable 1/2 hour ride down into the valley in the van. Mule ride was only about 1/2 hour long. I was expecting to ride along in more of the valley by the waterfalls, etc. The only waterfall we saw was on the way in the van. Driver suggested we hand him our camera to get a photo as that was the only spot to see the waterfall. The only reason the mule ride was even 1/2 hour was because they kept stopping to explain the vegetation and some historical information. Then another 1/2 hour in the hot van on the way back up. SAVE YOUR MONEY - DON'T TAKE THIS TOUR.

Waipio Valley is inhabited by a small group of counter-culture folks "living off the grid", and I believe this tour captures that spirit nicely. This is not the polished, slick, everything runs like clock-work tour. This is essentially a one-man operation (Bob), who has been living in the valley for 27 years. His van is old but seems reliable, his mules and cart that he uses at the bottom of the valley are priceless along with his guide dog, and his knowledge of the valley is amazing. Having said that, I don't think that Waipio Valley was so spectacularly better/different than many of the other amazing valleys and waterfalls we've visited in Hawaii that I would put this on the "must see" list. But if you want to tour the valley and aren't up to the strenuous hike, this feels like the right way to do it.
