The building is historic and full of charm.
It is beautifully maintained.
You can feel the love that Matthew and Dan have put into upgrading this piece of history
My room was comfortable with nice airflow. It was centrally located in Hilo .

This lovely old house close to the town centre is evocative of old Hawai’i, with the (rather loud) birds and frogs around the pond below the veranda and the mandatory ceiling fan. Book into the James Michener room and spend a lazy day (ha ha) reading one of the copies of “Hawaii” provided.

My husband and I visited this B&B in November 2016, but had booked everything around April/May 2016 (I'm a planner!). E-mailing with Matthew months in advance was easy - he answered all of my questions and made it very easy to book everything so far in advance. We arrived earlier than the normal check-in time, and although the room wasn't entirely ready yet, Danny let us drop off all of our luggage for safe keeping. Breakfast each morning was great - papaya fruit bowls were amazing, and there was always a selection of breads (bagels, croissants, english muffins, and toast), as well as some warm dishes (a cinnamon bread baked thing and an egg dish). Chatting with Matthew in the mornings was nice as well - he's very friendly and willing to give you advice about things to see or do.
We stayed in the Lava Room - seriously awesome! Great amount of space, and the waterfall shower head was hilariously awesome (it's a TORRENT of water, which was actually pretty great). Although the room is technically in the basement, the building itself seems to be built into a hill, so the room has a walkout to the ground level (basically what I'm saying is, you definitely don't feel like you're in a basement).

The use of the laundry facilities was perfect and much appreciated!

If you're staying in Hilo, I would 100% recommend this place. Awesome experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at Hilo Bay Hale B&B. The breakfasts were amazing. Our room had an adjacent patio where we spent our mornings and evenings. We preferred our solitude over joining other guests. The room was clean and comfortable. Matthew was so knowledgeable about where to go. We loved hiking out to the volcano best, though snorkeling and seeing breathtaking waterfalls was also fun. We walked to downtown Hilo most nights for dinner. We appreciated access to the kitchen and laundry, and also used the snorkeling gear here at the house. There was some noise from traffic, but we didn't notice it much after the first day. We hope to come back someday. Thank you for a lovely vacation.

We very much enjoyed our two night stay. Thanks to Matthew and Danny for all their renovations and work to make this place such a delight to stay in. And, good luck with the National Historic Register listing process! Loved Matthew's collectibles and antiques, brought me back to my grandmother's home in the best way possible.

We stayed in the Bay Room which we found very comfortable. The house is close to town and an easy stroll to and from dinner, to the Lyman Museum and several other sightseeing locations. After parking in the parking space one night, I choose to park on the street the next night finding this parking easier to navigate in an unfamiliar rental car. Great breakfasts - I loved the fresh fruit and Island yogurt flavors. Hubby particularly appreciative of the egg strata. We are so pleased we had a chance to talk with our hosts and hear the story of their efforts to save this house from the bulldozer. The efforts were certainly worthwhile.
