Space and views and home-style living for a big company.
Well, we are not really too picky travelers and are generally OK with modest accommodations.
But this place is great! The most spacious and comfortable house of everything
we tried in Hawaii. We had all we needed for 6 of us, I can easily imagine
having 8-9 people living there. Two Step beach is about 15 minutes drive away,
and Coffee Shack is 2 minutes away (our favorite breakfast spot from now on).
House being rather tall and set on the slope makes for much more pleasant microclimate compared to places directly near shoreline. So our morning coffee on lanai was awesome.
House instructions were clearly laid out, so even if we hadn't meet our host face to face, we had no problems with settling in when we arrived late at night.
We'll definitely be back when we go to Big Island.
Drawbacks I can think of - not many really. We prefer much firmer beda and having fans in each bedroom would help.
Dishwasher is kinda weak in regular mode, so we used its' "power" setting.
Overall, minor things.
We had a fine 5-day stay at Pu'uhonua House in Captain Cook. The house was clean, comfortable, amply appointed and affords a spectacular view of the coast, including the south portion of Kealakekua Bay. The kitchen had everything we needed for making our own meals. Beach towels, chairs, and umbrella were provided. The house is a short drive from Napoopoo where we rented kayaks, paddled to the Monument, and enjoyed excellent snorkeling. It is also only a short drive to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (city of refuge, ancient Hawaiian history park) and two-step for more great snorkeling. There is a ChoiceMart grocery store conveniently located just up the highway. We had one small problem (internet wasn't working on arrival) which was addressed promptly by the owner, who was great to deal with. The grounds around the house present a lovely mixture of tropical foliage. Beautiful to view, but with no "lawn" to sit on. But then the open design of the interior and surrounding glass/screen doors bring the outdoors inside. There is also a 3/4 surround lanai. The trees around the house are home to many noisy frogs, which may be a problem for some light sleepers. We enjoyed the sounds.
We spent a week here with our relatives loving the view and the location. The architecture of the house is unique--it's a 3-storey pole house --yes, it's 'hung' on 9 huge Douglas fir poles. The top floor is where we all hung out. If the weather permits, you can push back all the sliding glass doors and then it's almost like living outdoors.
The location is great--just 5 minutes from a grocery store, 5 minutes from great snorkeling, close to restaurants, botanical gardens, etc. The house was well supplied with bedding, towels, kitchen gear and some handy beach gear. The four bedrooms were equally comfortable. We will go back.
We visited the Big Island with another family and we absolutely fell in love with this house. This amazing property is situated in a very quaint location, just a short drive from Kona and all of its attractions. Great restaurants and shopping centers are all close by and convenient to the home. The pictures of this home are just the tip of the ice berg because its views and amenities are just amazing. The home has wrap around porches on the second and third floors so every room takes in the beautiful and lush views. The home itself was wonderfully maintained and had all the basics needed for preparing meals. When we visit the Big Island again, we would love to come back and stay at this home to create more memories that our family will cherish forever!
What an amazing house with awesome views. The pictures are not as nice as the actual views you will see from the balconies. If you want to feel like you are in Hawaii then I recommend you stay here! We visited with our 2 kids and another couple and still had plenty of room. Thank you!!
