The place has been here for over a hundred years. And as one might expect, it has been expanded / added-on to over the years. But it's a comfortable place right on the water and (true to their name) it really IS a great place to watch sunsets.

The room itself was OK: two beds, a sink in the room, a toilet and shower in a small room with a door. New air conditioning. Clean and (like I said) comfortable if not luxurious. No TVs in the rooms (and no decent LTE service anywhere nearby). Limited WiFi downstairs near the lobby (but not in the rooms).

In addition to the guest rooms, there's a fairly spacious dining room on the first floor where a pretty decent breakfast is served. Finally, the staff were quite friendly and helpful. Note: this is not a super luxurious kind of place but it IS a nice place to stay if you want to be right on the water.

The sunset resort is a very old establishment with an interesting history- it is more than 100 years old. The resort is a quiet reprieve on Washington Island that affords a beautiful west-facing sunset. The staff was very informative and helpful! Reviewers should know that the resort is very old fashioned, probably last updated in the 1970s and to be completely honest it did smell a bit musty (though very very clean)! As stated by other reviewers, rooms are tiny, though every room does have its own bathroom plus there is a very large shared communal space to hang out. Breakfast is available in the summer (not included) and we arrived right when they opened and were glad we did as it was very busy. The breakfast was hot and made to order, but very pricy for what you get and honestly, just not my families cup of tea. Overall, resort was quaint and cute with a beautiful sunset view and was a reasonable place to stay on Washington Island compared to the other options available on the island.

We were hoping for better accommodations in the room, as we only planned to stay one night. It was windy and raining when we arrived on the island, but that happens when we decide to travel a little later in the summer season. Not much was open on the island, but the Sunset Resort is a quaint and cozy little escape, much like stepping back in time with turn of the century decor. The bed was comfy, the bathroom a little too small, but nice, and with no TV in the rooms guests can enjoy a group watching event in the lobby (the couch could have been more comfortable). The owners were friendly and accommodating, and though the weekday breakfasts had already ended for the season, all in all it was a beautiful view and pleasant stay. I only rated it a three because most of the attractions and restaurants were closed by 4pm, except for one place we could enjoy burger night at Kary's (burgers were the only thing on the menu, so the online menu was misleading, but the food was good). The whole island experience was less than I had hoped for, but we can't always control the weather and availability. The bright spot was the view from the window (see photos) and the ferry ride back in glorious morning sunshine (see photos).

Because Washington Island was originally settled by Icelandic and Scandinavian people, their descendants have carried on by serving some of the traditional food. During our vacation we made sure that we visited the resort once again for one of their wonderful breakfasts. I had a delectable breakfast called "Barkräm Pankaka," Icelandic pancakes (crepes) filled with cream and yogurt and covered with cherries. My husband had "Norwegeian Grilled Toast." I would recommend these two or anything else on the menu.
The resort has historical photos on display as well as crafts for sale in the pleasant well-lighted restaurant. The waitstaff is pleasant, efficient and personable. There is plenty of parking and the location on the water is lovely.

We took a spur of the moment weekend drive and ended up on Washington Island. Walking outside at the Sunset resort felt like we were in the middle of nowhere enjoying nature. It was blissful... Beautiful views Great hosts and yummy breakfast

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms would have more privacy.... we were in room 1... no privacy
