We just returned from a weeklong stay at Holiday Acres Resort, and once again, experienced all that’s good about the North Woods of Wisconsin. We discovered Holiday Acres over 10 years ago, when our son discovered Camp Deerhorn (Deerhorn is amazing, but that’s a different story altogether). We head north to visit our son, who is now a counselor at Camp Deerhorn, and take a break from our crazy busy, always connected schedules. We fell in love with Holiday Acres’ Big Pine 6-bedroom home, as we travel with an entourage that includes our family, elderly parents, and friends (and their families).

You can read reviews about the resort, and check out the accommodations online. Understand that you are in the North Woods, so if you are looking for pristine living quarters and uninterrupted cell phone / high speed internet service, you may be disappointed (Big Pine does have internet service, so does the main lodge and coffee shop). But, if you are looking for a truly remarkable North Woods experience, Holiday Acres will not disappoint.

Many reviewers rave about the Zambon family, and yes, they are wonderful people. Kim, Keri, Jamie and Pete interact with the guests in a manner that makes you feel they genuinely appreciate you staying at the resort. That hospitality extends beyond the family, to other staff members as well. For example, one night, a local talent was performing at 3 Coins restaurant bar. Dee, a bartender at the resort who had the night off, was at the bar enjoying the music. As the crowd grew, Dee, sprung to action, weaving her way through the packed bar, taking orders to make sure all the patrons were served in a timely fashion – on her night off. Wow!

I am convinced Jamie and Pete can teach anyone to waterski, and we’ve got a long list of newbies to prove it. Seriously, don’t waste your time tubing if you have the opportunity to learn to ski on Lake Thompson.

We tried something new this year, yoga! It’s not something we normally do, but we had a lot of fun giving it a try. Gabrielle and Pete do nice job leading a diverse group of guests through some simple stretches and challenging poses.

Our favorite things to do… Sitting on the pier watching the skiers. Supper club meals at 3 Coins, Al Gen and Fireside. Road biking. Trying to finish a 1000+ piece puzzle or two. Jarts games by the fire pit. Interacting with the Zambon’s, the staff, guests and locals all week. Star gazing in the evening.

We've been going to Holiday Acres for almost twenty years and not much has changed. They really don't try and keep up with all the work that could be done with the resort. The beach is okay but they never have enough chairs. The new deck up by the fire pit is a great addition. Don't ever be in a hurry when you come here. I think it's called "Relax at the lake time." The staff is extremely slow and rarely on time for anything although everyone is very friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms with parking lot views are bigger and more modern. Rooms with a lake view are quieter but sma...

Dear Michael M,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Your 20 years of loyal patronage is very much appreciated. We are happy to know that you liked our new deck area. Maintenance is always ongoing although much of it may not be readily apparent. Your comment about "lake time" is a good reminder to all of us to do our best to stay on schedule. We look forward to welcoming you back again. Sincerely, Kari Z.

I'll start by saying that we really enjoyed our stay. Many of the comments about the beach, restaurant, bar, and friendly staff are spot on. But with the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I'd like to highlight some of the things that were less than perfect.

We came the last week of June and rented a cabin next to friends. We all have young kids and wanted to do a lot of the activities that are offered. The place was COMPLETELY dead... I'm not sure when it picks up, but we saw a handful of kids the whole week. We tried to do the pancake breakfast and the beer and burger nights... The cafe was closed the whole week, so we were directed to the main restaurant. In both cases, the servers had no idea what we were talking about. At the end of the visit, we found out the bar does have a great burger menu that we would have loved to try. We thought the Smores night wasn't happening either, but a few did finally show up, 45 minutes late.

There was also a wedding the first night with a band playing until midnight. I didn't mind the music, but we're there for the peace that the Northwoods offer! It definitely spoiled the mood for the first night.

I also ran some of the trails on site... they seemed pretty poorly marked and overgrown in a lot of places.

That said, the Hodag hunt on Wednesday had about 15 people turn out and was a lot of fun. More kids at the beach might have been nice, although my wife thinks having it to ourselves was its own treat. We had our run of the tennis courts and playground, and certainly weren't competing with anyone to use the equipment. :)

I guess I'd say to make sure you know what you're looking for and what you're getting, and ask pointedly about occupancy during different seasons. We were looking for a family experience, and felt like a lot of that was missing.

Dear Dumpyryan,
Thank you for taking the time to write a TripAdvisor review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and especially the Hodag Hunt. We are sorry that we were not able to have our Patio Coffee Shop open during your stay. Staffing was a problem and we were not able to open it up until the following week, which was later than usual. Please accept our apologies for the staff communication breakdowns regarding the pancake breakfast special and burger night. These can be easily done in either restaurant.

We take our guests' suggestions seriously, and that is how we improve. Your comments are invaluable. We hope that we can welcome your family again in the future.
Sincerely,
Kari Z.

We love HA. It has been our family reunion location for nearly 20 years. Our kids have grown up there. All the cousins would mutiny if we didn't go every summer. That says it all. Staff is friendly and helpful. The owners are deeply involved and caring. Stuff to do for evryone in the family from little kids to grandparents. Quiet lake without a lot of traffic which makes water skiing so fun. Cabins are from another era. Seems like your are in the wilderness, but a city 10 minutes away for things you need and short shopping trips. The Friday fish fry is great. Tuesday BBQ for the resort brings everyone out. We love the Northwoods and look forward to our next visit from the minute we leave.

Room Tip: Lake cabins are the best.

Dear ddubcabin4,
Your terrific review is appreciated more than you can know! It describes who we are and what we want to be so well. Families returning each year is one of the things that makes the resort especially fun our family and for all the crew. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! ~ Kari Z.
