I live only a few blocks away from this restaurant, so my wife and I go there all the time, and also order take-out. To begin with, a little history: before El Tequila opened, downtown New London was as dead as the business districts of most rural Wisconsin towns. There were tacky little bars, a few lawyers' offices, and everything else was shuttered... apart from the one or two boutiques that certain people run for "tax purposes," since there's no way they're actually employing anyone or making any money... or even selling anything anyone wants or needs. It was sad, boring, and irrelevant.
Then the Hernandez family opened El Tequila, and New London came back to life.
What is this place? It's a real family restaurant, run by a family, that offers good Mexican food at affordable prices. The decor is unique and colorful, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, and the service very personable. If you live in town, and are a regular, they probably recognize you and even remember your drink preference. The quality of the food is very consistent, and there are some unique items on the menu, including seafood and vegetarian options. Quite a few vegetarian options, actually. There's a full-service bar, and margaritas with quite a kick, but at El Tequila the food is the focus, and the bar crowd doesn't dominate (thankfully). There's also an outdoor deck, in back, where you can enjoy a meal beside the Wolf River.
