“Best pizza in the area. But be prepared to wait”
Review of Marcine's

Marcine's appears to be a little nondescript bar in a tiny town just outside of Madison. Don't let its unassuming outward appearance fool you though. It has a well deserved reputation for AMAZING pizza. There are tons of toppings to choose from, different crusts (I really enjoy the thin crust), and one pizza easily serves 3-4.

Be prepared to wait for your pizza to be served on busy nights, but the drinks are cold, rapidly refilled, and very reasonably priced

Marcine's is definitely worth the short drive from Madison

Our first visit to Marcine's occurred around 12:45 pm on a Thursday and was met by nearly capacity parking lot and nearby streets. Marcine's cinderblock exterior concealed an appealing and spacious Northwoods motif interior.

We had the choice of traditional tables or high top tables for our dine. We noticed a group of nearly a dozen lunch diners at a single table on our way in along with several other tables of 4 or so and a nearly packed bar.

A single bartender/server greeted us from behind the bar across from our selected high top four person table. The energetic lass came out to take our drink orders, and when we mentioned our preference for Marcine's renowned pizza, she quickly noted that pizza was not served until 2:00 pm.

It was just after 12:45 pm, and while a wait until 2:00 pm still fit our travel plans, we resigned ourselves to select an item from the expansive appetizer menu. It took a little while for our very busy bartender/server to return to get our food order, apologizing for the delay.

We selected the broccoli cheddar bites for $5 and were quickly treated to about 9 ea. of the hot, crispy and filling morsels of molten cheddar and broccoli.

At the time she took our appetizer and pizza order, our server noted that the cook had been extraordinarily busy with a very large lunch crowd which included two tables of 10 our or more patrons. In spite of the work load, she would start our selected sausage, mushroom and onion pizza when she got the chance. We were delighted with the news.

That chance led to a serving of our pizza around 1:25 pm, some 35 minutes before the normal ordering time of 2:00 pm. The pie was 14" and featured meatball size sausage chunks on the top of a molten lava flow of mozzarella under which concealed thinly sliced melt in your mouth onions and mushrooms on top of a savory and plentiful tomato based sauce.

The thin crust pizza was pie cut and the massive amount of cheese produced nearly 8" long cheese "stringers" from the first two slices moved to our plates. As a consumer of Midwestern thin crust pizzas for the past 47 years, the pie cut was an unexpected deviation from the traditional square cut and it forced me to forgo the pleasure of picking the slice up and eating it by hand. Instead I was happy to employ knife and fork to sample one of the best flavored pizzas of my long experience.

Perhaps as a result of the cook's efforts to please us with pizza preparation over 40 minutes before normal time, the pizza oven may not have reached the temperature necessary to properly cook and crisp the crust. The crust, while a moist dumpling consistency and texture, barely detracted from the otherwise phenomenal flavor of each bite.

The copious volume of cheese and other toppings had us requesting a take out box after eating only half (4 pieces) of the pie.

The three topping 14" pizza sported the unheard of low price of $12 cash, approximately 50% of the price found for many similar 3 topping pizzas in Midwestern cities. Together with two non-alcoholic beverages and our appetizer, the bill came to $20 cash. Back in Milwaukee or perhaps Madison, we could have expected a bill of up to $35 for similar fare.

Marcine's is a cash only business and posts this notice around the restaurant/bar along with a note that there is an ATM on premise. The value was so extraordinary that I didn't mind one bit giving up the 3% credit card points that I would have earned had credit cards been accepted.

Don't let the looks of the place fool you. Yes, it is a run down bar, but who cares? They have good food. In fact, I believe they have the best pizza in Dane County! Good thin crust and very generous with their delicious toppings. We especially love their sausage, which is so large it looks like meatballs. We are also a fan of their Monday night tacos. You can choose chicken for $2 or beef for $1. You sure can't beat their prices! The service can be a bit hit or miss. Because their food is so good and so reasonably priced, they are always busy. You'll likely have to wait a bit, but it should be worth it.
