This is a very small exhibit showing the history of flight, Billy Mitchell and Mitchell Field. It has old pictures and models that the contributions Milwaukee's people have made to the history of flight. It is good for adults and kids, It is right above the check-in area, easy to get to, and right on your way to your gate.

Milwaukee has a surprisingly rich aviation history - General Billy Mitchell, the father of American airpower; Astronaut James Lovell of Apollo 8 and 13 fame; Maj. Richard Bong, the top scoring American ace of WWII, and many other notable flyers come from Milwaukee or other places in the state. Milwaukee was also home of some early, if ultimately unsuccessful, pioneers in aircraft manufacturing and still the home of some aerospace manufacturers today. The Air Force Reserve and later the Air National Guard have had a presence at this airport since the Korean War, and, of course, many airlines have served or currently serve Milwaukee, others have even called Milwaukee their home. All of these and much more are covered in pretty good detail in this fine little museum with photos, ephemera, artifacts, models, and information panels.

You can easily spend an hour looking through the collection on display. Some artifacts have escaped the confines of the museum itself and can be found elsewhere in the terminal, so be on the lookout for them as well. It's also free - so the price is certainly right.

If you are into flying, take a moment and wonder around the Mitchell Gallery of Flight. You get to step back into time and savor the start of Mitchell Airfield and find out why it is named "Mitchell". Also get to see how it has grown over the decades.
