My wife and I stayed for 2 nights at Lost River right before New Years and found it to be one of the best vacation experiences we have ever had. Gary and Jesse not only welcomed us into their homes, but treated us personally to every aspect of the vacation at dinner, drinks (Jesse was the bartender), a personalized tour of the property, and was on hand throughout the day for anything we needed. The masseuse was first-class for hot stone treatment and was complimented by the immense quiet that the scenery had to offer. We were lucky for very nice mild winter weather, where a small fire was all we needed to unwind from the busy life of DC. I would wholeheartedly suggest to anyone a weekend here. The meals were splendid, the atmosphere was just enough to get away from the world, and Gary and Jesse treated us and everyone like friends.

I wanted to take my husband for a quick getaway to celebrate his birthday and pleasantly surprised at how wonderful our time was at the Guesthouse.

We drove through the rain on Friday to arrive at a gorgeous and enormous log cabin with too many fireplaces to count! Gary welcomed us and gave us a tour of the property ending with our room. We were impressed at how much space there was! We really wanted to spend a weekend together since we don't get a lot of alone time with two young boys in the house. It was wonderful- unlike other B & Bs where you get a room and breakfast and are kind of expected to clear out after breakfast, we were able to stay on the property and relax.

After we were settled in our room, we headed to dinner where we were both impressed with the quality of the food. The bread was cornbread- I'm spoiled for all other cornbread! It was light and sweet and perfect! The menu clearly is built around local food, but not to the exclusion of menu staples. I had the bacon wrapped chicken and it was perfect- not at all dry. My husband had the ribeye and he said it was delicious. Afterwards we played Scrabble in one of the public areas- there are many options such as billiards, games, or reading- and it was nice to get away from the endless work of staying at home.

Saturday we woke and had breakfast in the breakfast room- a warm and cozy place where all the guests eat around a large table. Apparently this was to be a weekend of bacon for me as I had a lot of bacon, eggs, and biscuits. I wonder if Gary & Jesse keep a little old grandma in the kitchen to make the biscuits- they were perfectly baked- not too doughy, and not dry! Make sure you try the apple butter- it tastes like Christmas!

Afterwards we relaxed in our room and later got in a workout in the fitness room. It's surprisingly well equipped for a small property such as this one with hand weights and machines as well as a bike, elliptical, treadmill, and stepper. We went to the General Store just down the road to try and find some apple butter- it was that good! My husband got a massage which he said was really well done. We both tend to get frequent massages and so we're kind of picky- he said it was one of the best he ever had!

While he got his massage, I relaxed and read in one of the public areas. I turned on the fireplace and lounged on an overstuffed leather couch- it was perfect. We had dinner that night - my husband had the meatloaf and said it was delicious. I had the french onion soup and Hardy salad. If you get a bowl of soup, be prepared to eat a small meal- the soup is a meal to itself! Afterward we had a drink and dessert in the bar and it was the perfect end to a fabulously lazy day.

Sunday morning we woke up to snow- it was beautiful but a little crazy driving in it! The breakfast was delicious again- pancakes this time. I believe I make the best pancakes on earth and don't often eat pancakes anywhere but these were delicious!

Gary and Jesse are wonderful hosts! They are genuinely nice guys and do everything they can to make sure you are comfortable.

Our only disappointment is not the fault of the Guesthouse or Gary & Jesse at all- it was that we purchased beer at the General Store where they have a surprising variety of unusual beers! We put it in the community refrigerator- and only drank some of it. The next morning, another bottle had disappeared thanks to another guest apparently not respecting the property of others. Clearly, this is absolutely not the fault of the Guesthouse - just a reminder that when you stay at a property like this one to be a good human and respect the property of others!

Room tip: We stayed in #1 and it was fantastic- it's centrally located and the king sized bed is comfy!

We were staying in a nearby cabin for the fourth of July and were told to check out the Lost River Guest House. They allowed us to use the pool as long as we ordered food and drink and gave guests priority for the chairs. It's a beautiful organic pool with a poolside par and drinks and food served to you right in the water. It caters heavily to the LGBT crowd from D.C., but the pool is not a wild scene. It's fun and relaxing.

This was our first time to stay at the Guesthouse at Lost River. We were guests at a wedding that was held on-site. The staff could not have been more welcoming, accommodating and helpful. The property is perfectly situated on a hillside with vistas of the surrounding mountains. We stayed in one of the guest cottages with friends who were also attending the wedding. Our room was comfortable and nicely appointed. The main room of our cottage had a gas fireplace, which made for some wonderful evenings to visit with our friends! I was particularly impressed with the public rooms in the main building. There were so many wonderful spots to relax, read a book or visit with friends. The Guesthouse catered a welcome dinner as well as the wedding dinner and reception. The food was delicious and the service was efficient and friendly. Their continental breakfast is particularly good! The Guest House at Lost River's wonderful atmosphere and relaxing environment make it the perfect place for a weekend getaway! We will definitely return!

The rooms and public areas are very cozy, comfortable and welcoming, blending in with the surrounding beauty of the property perfectly. Particularly impressive is the staff, who are welcoming and go to any length to ensure that your stay is a pleasant one. Whether it's just you, some friends, or a large group (wedding), you will not find a more attentive group of people dedicated to making your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The food at their restaurant is superb and if you want a little break from your quiet relaxation, there is a nice bar onsite on weekends, popular among locals and a great place to meet people in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
