The $14.95 "Early Bird" specials are the bargain. Happy hour appetizers and drinks cannot be beat for a selection of steamed mussels or clams, calamari fritters, salads, oyster sliders, double martinis and champgne cocktails and more. The "Purist" Fresh Halibut entree is perfectly cooked, albiet the accompaning pasta was a little oily.Pan fried local oysters are a welcome treat from the deep fryers around town. Servers are polite and efficient. Wise to make a reservation of week-ends and sunny days when commencement bay sparkles almost in your lap. Highly recommend!

My dining partner and I couldn't decide if Lobster Shop South earned an average or poor rating and since our policy is that ties go to the stronger rating, the restaurant gets an average - barely.

First the view. Fantastic. Terrific. Over the top beautiful. And if human beings lived on views alone, we would all likely be a lot thinner and Lobster Shop South would earn a beyond excellent rating. But alas that is not the world.

Ok, to start. One plus was a good draught beer for me and a nice non-alcoholic selection for my dining partner. Whatever its problems, Lobster Shop South doesn't consign those who decline alcohol to the lemonade and sweet soda purgatory, and that's a very good thing.

But the first course, a Dungeness Crab and and artichoke dip had even less crab than I suspected it might and came with an overwhelming cheese flavor that conquered the taste of any crab that might have snuck into the dish.

For an entree, my dining companion chose the Dungeness Crab cakes that were 100% crab but which still managed to taste run-of -the-mill and I chose one of the signature salmon dishes. The salmon was delicious, and melted on the tongue, but the portion was small and all the sides were pretty average. Further, the restaurant gave my companion the wrong side even after we had discussed the choice with the server at some length.

All told, Lobster Shop South did not serve bad food and had a terrific view, but the experience felt quite a bit like the restaurant had decided to coast on its views and charge a lot for its meals. With one draught beer, we spent $42.00 per person on the meal. I would recommend choosing a restaurant with a wonderful view that still believed in making magic in the kitchen worthy of the view.

The view was really nice but other than that nothing else was very special. I had the steak Diane. The steak was tough and over cooked and the lobster was chewy. The server seemed nice enough but she had too many tables to wait on and the service compromised. My wife had halibut and she said it was just okay. It was also rather tough and not moist and fresh. I had heard about this place for years and had been looking forward to trying it out but the experience was very disappointing.

The Lobster Shop is old school but old school is good when it translates into the kind of service, food and overall experience that this Puget Sound icon delivers. It doesn't try to be new and hip and the menu is classic -- no fusion or fuss here. Ironically, the lobster is okay but it's the crab cakes and lobster bisque that really stand out as exceptional. Be prepared to leave your calorie counter at home - -the food is rich but worth the indulgence. 90% of the seats offer exceptional views of Puget Sound and you can watch the ferry wind its way to Vashon Island. Such a romantic restaurant.

The Lobster Shop on Commencement Bay is at the end of Ruston Way in Tacoma, right on the waterfront. It has wonderful water views and patio dining during the warmer months. We went to the Lobster Shop to celebrate my birthday with family and to take part in the Twilight DInner. The Twilight Dinner is a great deal....Chowder, salad or dessert and an entree for 15.00. A super deal considering their regular dinner menu runs from $14.95 - $40.00 for an entree alone. As a bonus, for a dollar extra you can add a shrimp cocktail or Crab costini to your meal. The cocktail was served overheaping with Shrimp and the crab costini was crisp and tasty.
The entree I ordered was the Potato encrusted Cod. The potato crust was supposed to be crisp but was a soggy mess that tasted like stale potato chips. The cod was actually not bad once I scrapped the sloppy mess of of it. It was served with steamed broccoli and carrots, which were tasty and fesh and along side of that were mashed potatoes that had a hint of garlic but tasted like something you would get in a cafeteria. My family were pleased with their entrees....Fish and Chips and a really wonderful Seafood Marinara that was stuffed full of seafood - Clams, mussels, salmon, crab, shrimp. It was a very, very good dish for the price! My daughter also ordered the Lobster Bisque that was creamy, flavorful, and loaded with lobster.
Dessert was Creme Brulee and that happened to be y my favorite thing of the whole meal. Overall, I loved the views of the water and mountains, the restaurant was really nice yet casual, service was wonderful and the dinner was a good value for the money. I just expected more and thought the food should have been much better given how nice of a restaurant it is. I may give it another try at a later date. I hear their Sunday Brunch is quite good.
