This is definitely challenging, but the constant waterfall views along the way make it worth it. The trails are in excellent condition! The falls are beautiful. Keep in mind that when you reach the top, you don't actually see any falls at that point, but the mountain views are great there. Stay ON THE TRAIL. There are multiple signs asking you to. It's dangerous to go off of the trails. Take $3 cash for the 'entrance fee' (no change is given). When done, stop by one of the cool breweries! We did Wild Wolf - great place!

This is a hidden gem in Nelson County. It is the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. OK, some people like to quibble because it is a series of drops rather than a straight drop. The series of drops makes it much more enjoyable that a single straight drop. There are a number of places where you can step off the trail and view the falls from a deck. And you can choose how far you want to go on the trail up the falls. If you get tired, just turn back and enjoy what you saw. Note that there are no soda machines or other water sources anywhere on the trail. You're walking in or close to the woods, so it stays comfortable. But you need to take water with you. The falls themselves are beautiful and should be on anyone's list if they're on the Blue Ridge Parkway or in the surrounding national forests.

Busy Sunday afternoon with gorgeous weather so lots of people outside enjoying the area. We parked then walked a short distance to the falls. Multiple signs warning visitors to remain on the trail, but of course at the falls some visitors had decided to stand on the slippery rocks for their photo opportunities. Really not the best choice since it is posted that 30 people have already died this year attempting to do the same. There is also the upper trail that meanders through the stunning forest. Really nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

First note, there's a $3 self pay entrance fee. The ride leading up the falls was quite slow, so factor that into your time. It's very rural and peaceful. Also the bathrooms were more like a permanent porta potty. Once you enter the park, the lower falls are a very easy 500 feet or so. There's an observation area to take it in and snap some photos. To access the upper falls, you'll continue up the path. The trail is 1.7 miles. We only made it to the top of the falls which was about .9 miles. We were worn out because of the incline and the heat. The climb wasn't treacherous, just tiring. There were stairs (at times, pretty steep) and railing along the way. The hike is pretty shaded. It was worth the hike in my opinion.

Crabtree Falls is beautiful. The hike is really steep, so wear proper shoes and bring water to drink!
