What others have said is perfectly true: this is closer to a two star hotel. It is vetust and much needs to be done to bring it up to scratch.

Positives first:

We liked the room, which had good dimensions, matching retro furniture, a boxed balcony large enough to sit in and a magnificent view south along the beach with the Atlantic waves rolling in. The personnel at the desk are polite and do actually say hello to you, which is becoming increasingly unusual.

There is a good-sized pool downstairs. We usually had it to ourselves. The water is clean. This is important because the beach is impossible to swim from. Many rocks and the force of the rollers make it too dangerous. I’m a strong swimmer and tried to get in once and would not recommend it.

The mattress and base have springs, so it may not be ideal if you have a bad back.

The shower is fixed and there is never any hot water. If you want a hot shower, with a shower head you can move, you need to go down to the pool changing rooms.

One of the reasons few people use the facilities downstairs is because it all looks dilapidated and uninviting. On many occasions, the lights in the two exercise areas did not work. Same was true in the shower area.

The operating console for the men’s Turkish bath is broken. If you want to use it, you have to open a grubby and water warped door without a handle to the left of the bath and flick the switch on the tank. Sometimes the bath became hot, sometimes not. There was no way to activate the women’s Turkish bath.

The jacuzzi worked (switches on the side) but was sometimes warm and sometimes cold.

When it rains, and it rained a lot during our stay, the roof of the pool leaks quite heavily.

Breakfast was poor. Bread was either stale or defrosted, not sure which. The toaster works, though. Milk for cereals was never cold. Don’t bother with the fruit juices. Scrambled egg available but cold. Coffee from a machine and undrinkable.

The breakfast personnel were not very helpful. Getting one fried egg each was a constant problem throughout the stay and often had to be ordered more than once to receive anything. They took a very long time to arrive. One morning, the two personnel on duty refused to understand and laughed at me when I ordered in English and then ‘huevos fritos’ which although Spanish, is not very far from the Portuguese. Personnel from reception had to be called. Although no one told us that the eggs would cost extra and there was no sign to that effect, we were charged 1€20 for each egg at the end of the stay. So much for four stars.....

The hotel is close to the beach, but that picture which shows a wooden walkway winding through to sand dunes does not lead from the hotel. There is quite a lot of fantasy in the hotel’s description of what it offers. We thought it was significantly overpriced in comparison to others stays made in the Algarve region of Portugal.

This hotel may have been 4 stars 20 years ago but now it is run down, not very clean, not well staffed, too expensive for what it is offering and the only thing good about it is the beach in front. The spa is, well disappointing at best. The couples 45 minute message is actually not for couples and only 22min per person at a time. Our room spelled weird and had weird stains on random things, like on the lamps...and on the furniture. Decor is from the 80s. The only thing nice was the fact that my husband and I got a weekend to spend together away from the kids...do not recommend!

I have been in this hotel in December 2017:

Close to the Beach
Free Parking close to the hotel ( Perhaps in high season could be difficult to park)
Indoor swiming pool

A little bit old, needs some update.
Breakfast is not very good (little variety)
Far from city centre

I think it is not a 4 stars hotel, only 4 stars could be the location close to the beach.

As a retired couple on a first visit to Portugal and looking for a quiet spot by the ocean and near to Porto we couldn't have had better location than the Golden Tulip. We stayed for 7 nights from 13/11/17 in a large, clean, comfortable room with a balcony(common to all rooms) that had a great sea view. The bed was one of the largest I've slept in and the shower and toilet facilities were very good. Very good wi-fi connection throughout the hotel.
The breakfast whilst not outstanding offered a good selection that always filled us up.
The hotel also has it's own restaurant, Casa Branca where we had 2 outstanding evening meals.
You are only 50 metres away from the beach and a bus stop with 3 routes into Porto as well as a bicycle path/footpath that takes you along the River Douro to the port wine cellars via Afurada, which is worth a visit in it's own right.
However, what really marks this hotel out are it's fantastically friendly, helpful and courteous staff. We are already looking forward to another visit in 2018.Mike H

Room tip: south facing rooms on top two floors have best views

Room was spacious and warm but lack some comfort, for example a four star hotel should have duvet not wool blankets. The furniture is outdated, a mix between neo classic and rococo, just kidding, pure bad taste.

Being so near to sea we would expect that the hotel had a beach inspired decoration. The carpets on the corridor have the logos of the previous hotel name, with the tear and wear of those days.

Average breakfast

Now lets talk about the bright side.

Bathroom recently renovated and in pristine conditions. Great location, 50 meter walk from the beach with wonderful balcony sea view. 10 minute drive or one and a half hour walk (river front bicycle path all the way) to VNGaia wine cellars. Great wi-fi connection in the rooms. The staff is great, very polite and helpful. Easy parking in front of the hotel.

Room tip: The rooms in the 2nd floor were recently renovated
