Could not believe how well designed was each room and terrace and also the garden. Thought has gone into every detail - in bathroom, in bedroom - on terrace - and at the pool. The plantings are now mature and a joy to take in as one strolls around. The dinners are the best of home cooking - a local wine with every course (and the owner knows her wines!) - and very very reasonably priced. No question it merits its reviews and more!

Simply stunning hotel, grounds, food, facilities and hosts (Adelaide and Ursula)!! What more could you want? Simple answer – NOTHING. Chanceleiros was paradise. Set in the Douro, the stunning views and backdrops added to the beauty of this accommodation. The property itself is breath taking. The indoor (living room, billiard room, bar and kitchen) and outdoor spaces (swimming pool, tennis court, Jacuzzi, sauna, honesty bar/bbq area) were all immaculately presented, inviting and relaxing! Our room was a suite, situated at the back of the property which had a large bathroom, seating area indoors and two terraced outdoor areas. Complimentary port in our room was a lovely touch. The room also had a large desk area, a chaise longue for relaxing and a fireplace with a comfy seating area in front. Perfectly laid out and very spacious. We ate dinner at Chancelerios on both evenings and the three-course dinner with entrees to start were delicious. Local traditional dishes cooked to perfection and served with a pre dinner port then local wines from the surrounding wine yards (all of which you could see from the property). It could not have been more idyllic and prefect. The sun setting in the background of the terrace was very romantic. The review would not be complete without mentioning Molly the bulldog and Cookie the terrier, they both added charm our stay. The friendliest (and loveable) dogs.

Our short 2-day stay was just too short! A small haven that should be experienced. Thank you, thank you Ursula and Adelaide we loved every single moment. 110% we will be back!

Room Tip: the suites are stunning

A place to rest. A gourgious house, amazing view and surroundings. When you arrive you don't want to leave. Especially once you are inth swiming pool. The owner is a German woman with only women working there, everyone very nice ans speaking either English or French. Food is ok, not great.

We just spent a delightful week here. Everything was perfect -- and we are a picky couple! The setting is beautiful in the hills, relaxing and calming. The accommodation was comfortable. The dinners were like a 5 start restaurant at a fraction the price. And best of all was the warm atmosphere created by Ursula and Adelaide and the staff. Friendly helpful and caring about every detail. We had wonderful conversations at dinner with people from all over -- from Australia to Germany! One of the nicest stays ever. Thank you Ursula and Adelaide and your staff.

We traveled around Portugal for 3 weeks, but the Casa do Visconde was without question our favorite stop. Ursula has created a real gem. I can only echo the praise other reviewers have lavished on it, and confirm that the hotel is as good or better than advertised. Our room was a spacious, freestanding cottage, with a small table and chairs outside both front and back (we tended to lounge in front, under the beautiful grape arbor). It was perfectly quiet. The bed was firm, there were a number of seating areas, and the shower/bath was huge. I highly recommend booking one of the superior rooms (we loved Room B)—some of the standard rooms face onto the central walkway and would have been less private. The dinners were excellent—Ursula comes up with something different every night, and the cooking was as good as the portions were plentiful. The style is traditional, and all the ingredients are fresh and top quality. You get as much wine as you want, basically (in addition to the carafe of port in the room). Breakfasts were the best we had anywhere. Ursula is also a font of good advice (and savvy insight about local culture). She steered us to some excellent wineries, after we’d described our taste preferences, and they suited us perfectly. I especially recommend Popa and Tedo, if you’re looking for small producers who do adventurous things with the Douro varietals. As for Molly: she’s getting a bit long in the tooth, and doesn’t bother anybody. Adelaide and the rest of the staff were also terrific. I could go on, but only to repeat what others have said. If my wife and I return to Portugal, it’ll be because we had to come back and enjoy this spectacular casa again—and, of course, the beautiful Douro scenery it opens up for you. Some guests were getting in and out of Pinhao by taxi, but I’d recommend renting a car to really enjoy the landscape. (It’s worth a drive up to the miraduoro at Casal de Loivos, by the way).

One tip: consider going to Lamego, which has a couple of interesting large churches, connected by a magnificent set of stairs (if you don’t want to walk the 611 steps, you can drive around it). And if you do go, be sure to visit the 7th-century Capela de Sao Pedra. Don’t try to walk to it from the center of the city, as we did—the walk is unpleasant and steep; but it’s only a 5-10 minute drive.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are private and quiet. Some standard rooms are on the main walkway.
