We decided to do something we hadn't done before and take a late October Italian sunshine break for my son's half-term, and we chose the Sorriso Therme Resort.

We'd booked, but hadn't read the negative reviews about Sorriso Resort until a day or so before we left - so we were wondering what we were in for. One thing is clear - that if you want to be within easy reach of the facilities you do better to pay a bit more and take rooms within the main hotel complex. There are some rooms further up the road - we started in one and in some regards the room suited us better as it was larger, the bed and bathroom bigger; but for convenience the main part of the resort - where we upgraded to for a charge - is where it's best to stay; particularly in the cooler times of year as you can still swim outdoors in the lovely heated pools, but the cold air hits you when you get out; so proximity to your own room and facilities is more necessary.

The hotel was full - all the time we were there - and the main restaurant packed every night. The food was very good and we had no complaints. Some dishes were done to perfection - I'm thinking of the squid pasta which I've known (minus the pasta but with potato instead) as Totani con Palate - a speciality of Positano's Da Adolfo. As a devotee of that dish I was gobsmacked that Sorriso's pasta tasted exactly the same. And there was a buffet full of delicious things for both breakfast and dinner (we were half board). The staff are friendly but flat-out busy running such a large complex. They always did their best to accommodate our needs and were helpful and kind.

The pools are heated with thermal waters, so in the summer I would say you would do better to take the hotel's shuttle bus to the beach where apparently (we were told) there's an arrangement with a stabilamento (beach club) for use by the hotel's clients. Alternatively there's the magnificent Poseidon Therme which is a complex of more swimming and thermal pools than you can count which is a great place to go. The shuttle will take you there as well.

The main pool is by the reception entrance and has a nice bar beside it which serves snacks and light salad-style lunches. There are aquafit classes and the pool is heated with thermal waters. That was our favourite as it's quite big. The one indoors is a 20-minutes-only place as the water there is really quite hot - but that's great too. The third we hadn't tried as it was a bit lower down from the main building, but people seemed to enjoy it there just as much. It's a bit more private and harder to locate so it's quieter, next to the Oasis restaurant.

Someone complained about mosquitoes, but it is impossible to avoid them in this region in the summer so you should take your own precautions. We didn't ourselves, have that problem at Sorriso as we visited in October, but in the other Ischia hotel we stayed in back in July you couldn't escape them. You need to obtain anti-mozzie products from the pharmacy.

It's worth mentioning that the hotel runs full-time around the year and doesn't need to close because its facilities are not seasonal. The Spa has an array of treatments that any such London facility would envy. There are also Aqua fit classes which are fun in the pool, and probably other things we didn't look into.

We've found Sorriso a very enjoyable place and the number of guests must tell you all you need to know. We very much hope to return; the whole Forio area is beautiful and beguiling.

Room tip: Better in the main part of the complex. The rooms on the hill are fine if you are not bothered about walking a short distance.

If weather is good and you don't need any help(thermal pools ARE NOT HOT/SAID 36-38degrees), resort concept is great. SO DISAPPOINTED. Arrived to DIRTY ROOMS and DIRTY INDOOR POOL. No help from management nor tech to raise 34.5C beautiful outdoor seaview pool=reason we booked Sorriso was to experience thermal at night. COLD INCOMING JET WATER! Couldn't even enjoy it when it was 18degrees out. No staff ever passes to ask if help was needed. No one near thermal pools to help. I had to freeze in wet towel to walk to main reception to get any feedback (found a far-fetched housephone and reception said to go wait at an empty far away spa reception desk for staff to arrive, because main reception cannot contact techs.) This is a 3 star hotel at best. Absolutely not 4 stars. And 24h pools too cold to use if weather is below 20 at night with inconsistent temperatures.

Booked annex standard room and was told 200 metres away by one receptionist, then 100 metres by another. Arrived to a very dirty and humid feeling room at one villa that was far away on main road with horrible constant car/loud motorcycle traffic noise. There were other people's clothes in closet and hairs all over floor and sink. We were disgusted although we didn't want to allow this to spoil our precious few days of anticipated holiday. Reception came and showed 2 other rooms in same villa but they were noisy of course. Then took us to a small room without balcony (reservation room description wrote balcony) in Villa Giusti and we just settled to stop wasting time. Bathroom shower was mouldy (receptionist was with us to agree but of course this is a management problem.) He said no other solution so

Good choice, if first line of the sea is not mandatory for you. A cosy comfortable hotel with two thermal pools. Interior - very nice in medeteranian style and we particularly recommend to visit in the late evening and night. Pools are available 24/7. The beach can be reached by shuttle or stairs, a descent which takes quite a long time. The hotel is within walking distance from the Poseidon Gardens and Forio.

Room tip: Be sure to carefully check your bill before paying

The room was overpriced, located far away from the main hotel and absolutely not right for the level of a 4 star hotel. Small bed, poor furniture, tiny room with barely some light coming in...this is not even a 2 star place, it must be a joke. This is an absolute scam, they deserve to be reported for such a fraud. At least we could use the thermal baths within the hotel, but even those had lukewarm water, slimy unclean pools and a lot of the buttons that were to activate the water massages were not working. Thanks sorriso, for an "unforgettable" experience. Thank God Ischia was amazing and we enjoyed it despite this bad adventure with you.
