We were thrilled to happen upon Porta tou Yialou while shopping in Naxos Town. It's one street off the Promenade, which meant that we enjoyed the cooler shade and even a bit of breeze rather than the warmth of the Main Street restaurants. We also felt like "insiders" enjoying an excellent meal while everyone else was jostling for a table on Main Street!
Our first meal (yes, we went back for dinner another night) we had gigantes, Saganaki cheese, Greek salad, and tdaziki and bread to start. Every offering was delicious. The main course grilled octopus was more tender (and served with lemon!) than what we'd had at a "seafood restaurant" around the corner the day before. We really enjoyed the lamb chops, however. Served with Naxos potatoes, they were pull-the-meat-off-with-your-teeth salty goodness!
And the red house wine: a lovely fruity cup of yumminess!
The wait staff was very responsive and helpful. At the end of the meal, we met the chef and his wife, who brought us Visitor Tour Guides of Naxos; they were a delightful couple and the book was an outstanding summary of all things Naxos.
As I said above, we went back another night because the quality of food, the ambience, the service, and the price could not be beat!
I hope everyone gives Porta tou Gialou a try! You'll be glad you did.

We were shown to table at back of restaurant where they kept a lot of cardboard boxes, although it was probably too cold to sit outside. The main problem was that we ordered Gigantes as a starter, we were not told that they didn't have any, but they served small naxos beans which are completely different and had carrot mixed in. Apart from that food ok but have had much better in Naxos.

This restaurant was recommended to us by the owner of our hotel where we stayed. This is where he would go for dinner. Family run hotel. We had grilled meat platter for two. Good food. Service good. Athentic. Reasonable priced.

Porta tou Gialou is a good place to get traditional Greek food. I'd stick with their "ready" dishes rather than fresh fish though. Their bekri meze is very tasty, as is their fava, horta and gigantes. The loose white wine is excellent, and much better than what most tavernas serve. Pleasant family-run spot

Very good - beef in tomato sauce excellent and gigantes fabulous. Unassuming and in back street, it's good honest food and friendly staff obviously keeps it busy!
I think the people who went on 20/8 we're having a bad day - we were only in Naxos for 3 days and liked it so much went 2 days in a row :)
