We were thrilled to happen upon Porta tou Yialou while shopping in Naxos Town. It's one street off the Promenade, which meant that we enjoyed the cooler shade and even a bit of breeze rather than the warmth of the Main Street restaurants. We also felt like "insiders" enjoying an excellent meal while everyone else was jostling for a table on Main Street!
Our first meal (yes, we went back for dinner another night) we had gigantes, Saganaki cheese, Greek salad, and tdaziki and bread to start. Every offering was delicious. The main course grilled octopus was more tender (and served with lemon!) than what we'd had at a "seafood restaurant" around the corner the day before. We really enjoyed the lamb chops, however. Served with Naxos potatoes, they were pull-the-meat-off-with-your-teeth salty goodness!
And the red house wine: a lovely fruity cup of yumminess!
The wait staff was very responsive and helpful. At the end of the meal, we met the chef and his wife, who brought us Visitor Tour Guides of Naxos; they were a delightful couple and the book was an outstanding summary of all things Naxos.
As I said above, we went back another night because the quality of food, the ambience, the service, and the price could not be beat!
I hope everyone gives Porta tou Gialou a try! You'll be glad you did.
